UCLA is ranked ninth in the world for engineering, according to a report today from Times Higher Education, a United Kingdom-based company that analyzes universities across the globe for performance in research and education.

The 2020 subject ranking for engineering and technology also places UCLA sixth in the U.S. and first among U.S. public universities. This year’s ranking, which looked at 903 universities around the world, saw UCLA jump four spots from last year’s list.

The new 2020 subject ranking for computer science has UCLA at 12th in the world, the same spot globally as last year. The 2020 ranking also places UCLA 7th in the U.S., up one spot nationally from last year, and first among U.S. public universities.

The publication’s subject rankings are based on several factors, including research productivity, reputation and influence; teaching; knowledge transfer; and ability to attract international scholars and students.

Dean Murthy“We are very pleased with the latest rankings which highlight the great work that our faculty and students are doing,” said Jayathi Murthy, Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. “As we undergo this exciting period of accelerated growth for our school, we will continue to focus on engineering change that will solve major societal challenges and transform lives for the better.”

I’m currently a high school senior with the option to attend either UCLA or Cal for Computer Science (not Computer Engineering or EECS). I know that Berkeley’s CS program is ranked much higher than UCLA’s, but I also know that choosing a more prestigious program won’t necessarily make or break the amount of success I have in my career. That being said, I would like to clear up some rumors I’ve heard about UCLA’s CS program:

Is it true that there is little flexibility course selection and language usage? Do you feel that this has had a negative impact on your learning experience?

Objectively, how difficult is CS at UCLA? Is there time for me to enjoy my life as a CS student?

Is it possible/feasible to balance greek life with pursuit of a CS degree?

I’ve heard that startup culture is lacking at UCLA. What options exist for those interested in entrepreneurship?

How is the job/internship market as a CS student at UCLA?

If you chose UCLA over Cal, would you make the same decision again?

Ignoring academics, I feel like I would enjoy UCLA more than I would Cal. While I certainly care about getting good grades (I’m a valedictorian of my class), having a strong social life is just as important to me. Based on what I’ve heard, UCLA is significantly more balanced in that regard. As far as location is concerned, I’m a valley native, but I don’t have that desire to leave my hometown that many people seem to have; I love Los Angeles and I could definitely see myself staying local.

As I’m sure you can see, this will be a very tough decision for me to make, but I would immensely appreciate any help in one way or another to help me inch closer to my final choice.

Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I found your comment

They seem focused on keeping up with the latest hot trends as opposed to sticking with the fundamentals.

to be interesting since another comparison between the two schools denounced UCLA’s curriculum as being too abstract and theoretical whereas Berkeley’s is more practical. But I definitely see where you’re coming from, since trends are after all just that.

3 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Junior: Being a student at the University of Southern California is like no other. The campus is beautiful and the academics are stellar. The whole school feels like one big family. The athletic programs are top notch and really bring all the students together. I love being able to attend countless games while seeing cheering fans who truly love where they go to school. The best part about the University of Southern California is the Trojan alumni. With over 425,000 Trojan alumni in the world, you are always connected to a Trojan. The wonderful Trojan alumni are there for you beyond your four years. They give opportunities to advance in your desired career field, as well as be there in a new environment. 4 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Alum: Attending Harvey Mudd College was a humbling experience. I was able to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics with peers who were similarly passionate. There are boundless opportunities to take courses both on campus or at any of the four other undergraduate Claremont Colleges that are all within a 1-mile radius, just a short walk or quick bike-ride away. I had the opportunity to pursue summer research projects and engage in a thesis project during my senior year. The campus encourages students to present their research across the nation at various conferences. It’s not uncommon for the department sponsoring your research project to also sponsor your attendance at research conferences including paying for hotel, airfare, and a food stipend! Last but most definitely not least, the advisors are passionate about your success and meet with students frequently. I personally met with my advisor on a weekly basis. I am grateful for this amazing undergraduate institution!

5 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Freshman: My first quarter at UCLA was not what I had dreamed it would be. However, the school is making the most of it! Traditional events are still held online to the best of their ability, and they offer many opportunities to socialize with others. There are many student organizations to join with interests in nearly everything. I was never drawn to Greek Life, but at UCLA, the sororities were very welcoming, and joining was the best decision I made this quarter. It was a gateway to meeting new people and making friends. In terms of academics, my professors were flexible with our schedules and empathized with us during this pandemic. The one thing that I would change, though, would be the tuition and fees. The payments are quite expensive for being online and not being able to use any of those resources in person. Overall, I do not regret my decision of attending UCLA and considering the circumstances, I enjoyed my first quarter!

6 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Freshman: I am currently an out of state freshman at Berkeley over halfway through my second semester. I was wary of having high expectations of Berkeley and buying into the cultivated image of perfect inclusion, challenging and inspiring intellectualism, and care for social justice/activism. Even though I tried to manage my expectations, they were disappointed. THAT BEING SAID, I’m glad I am a student at Berkeley. It is the best and the worst, wonderful and terrible, and for me, that feels like a fairly accurate representation of how the world is today. If you would describe yourself as an idealistic person, yes, come to Berkeley! But be prepared to hold onto your values tightly.

Sophomore: Pomona College is a great school with so many interesting people from all over the world! It’s a very diverse group of students, and because there are 4 other colleges there, we have access to a wide range of classes, locations and experiences across the “5C’s.” I play softball for Pomona Pitzer, and the team spirit keeps me sane, while the support from other student-athletes from football and baseball, etc. is really cool. It’s a small school, but big on ideas and things to do in and around LA area. Claremont is a cool little village we walk to from campus and its only a short drive to beach or mountains.

8 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Freshman: I absolutely love my school. I think its difficult to detail campus life since we all are doing our part to slow the spread of the virus on campus but i can say its a wonderful environment. I have amazing professors that do their best even virtually to help everyone. The food is also delicious! As someone who is vegan, I was nervous that there wouldn’t be that many options but I was surprised to see an entire kitchen section specifically for vegan cuisine. UCI also has many resources that ensure we perform well, from free tutoring and counseling to online events for studying in groups and meeting new people. UCI truly cares deeply about its students and I haven’t had a bad experience with my campus representative. I am so happy with my decision to choose UCI and encourage anyone who wants to have a quality education in a great college environment to do the same.

10 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Freshman: This college is great! They are so freshman oriented and work very hard to help incoming students adapt to college life. Also, the new dorms are great! It’s awesome to see colleges incorporating gender-inclusive areas to make all students, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, comfortable in their living spaces. Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” motto is taken to heart by the staff and faculty members, meaning students are truly encouraged to put themselves out there while incorporating their learning into life. The one complaint I have in the disorganization of the student portal. It’s pretty difficult to navigate if you’re not accustomed to using it.

11 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Junior: I love the friendly environment on the beautiful environment! Living on campus was a nice experience because they have dorms that are fairly close to the lecture halls. Some lecture halls weren’t as clean as the newer ones, but they are advancing vary rapidly. I do have to say that my department, College of Engineering, is very competitive, but that is what I get for choosing an impacted department. Some professors are nicer than others, depending on the department. I do have to say that they have an extensive amount of resources available for every need, basic need, health, and academic. The advisors, depending on the department, are also aren’t s helpful as you may think. I would advise to learn the current catalog for your major to know what classes are needed for graduation. Currently I admire the research that the university has been up to with the uncontrollable coronavirus. I love that they have testing sites that expedite the results to students, faculty, and other employees

Plenty of delicious food options and a great variety of classes to take, both within major requirements and elective classes. Though I do not give it 5 stars because they do lack diversity and they really market themselves as a small school so you’ll be able to get into all your classes which definitely is not the case. There are so many different opportunities Chapman gives you from the variety of majors and minors to the connections you will make, Chapman is the place to go if you want an amazing career in the future. The professors push and challenge you while also making learning fun. And how can you beat living 20 mins from the beach!

University of the Pacific

Rating 3.62 out of 5 1,236 reviews

23 Best Colleges for Computer Science in California

Alum: A close-knit environment that allowed for constant collaboration between peers, professors, and faculty advisors. I am proud to call the University of the Pacific my home. I have developed more academically in the past two years at Pacific than my junior college and high school years combined. Pacific strives for excellence in all of its students and recognizes their abilities individually. While maintaining a positive experience on campus, the University of the Pacific additionally focuses time and energy into giving back to the Stockton Community. Plenty of volunteer opportunities provided alongside rich experiences that shape the way we view the world around us. Once a tiger, always a tiger.

Junior: I love that at CSULB I am taught by professors who really care about my education and who push me to succeed on a daily basis. I also enjoy all the academic resources, such as the University Library and the 24 hour study place in the student union, as well as the extracurricular resources, such as the bowling alley in the student union and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, just to name a few! Lastly, CSULB has amazing psychological counseling services available to students everyday, who make the transition to college as well as overcoming the common college obstacles so much easier to tackle.

Laguna College of Art & Design
4 Year Laguna Beach, CA
Rating 4.02 out of 5 200 reviews
Freshman: I have really enjoyed my time so far with LCAD! The professors are awesome and very knowledgeable about the topics they teach, as well as being very understanding during this turbulent time in regards to due dates and being mindful of class workloads while still providing students with a challenge. I feel as though I have learned quite a bit even over just one semester, and the opportunities for clubs and connections to job markets are vast. While I do receive a decent scholarship to attend, I find that the administration is not super helpful in working out payment options for students who receive no parental financial assistance with tuition and are not very understanding of such circumstances, though I am used to falling through the cracks in this way, unfortunately. Still, I hope to continue to be able to attend this school, as I have so far very much enjoyed my classmates, work, and professors.

Suffolk University
4 Year Boston, MA
Rating 3.46 out of 5 997 reviews
Sophomore: Ive been at Suffolk for a year now. Just know coming to this school, you get out of any college what you put into it. The professors here are as good (if not better) that the college that I transferred from, Umass Amherst (this is proabably because the school has an enormous budget for it’s professors) . The campus is stunning. People are usually upset here because they don’t receive the traditional college experience, but you shouldn’t expect that coming to this school anyway. Like i said, the education here is top notch as long as you are willing to put in the work. About half the students here dont care and cheat their way to B’s. But the students here that actually want to learn and be successful in life are granted those opportunities from Suffolk. The potential ROI is enormous if you want it to be. Hope this helps!

Keiser University – Fort Lauderdale
4 Year Fort Lauderdale, FL
Rating 4.04 out of 5 1,144 reviews
Graduate Student: My current experience with Keiser University (KU) thus far has been a wonderful one! Currently, I am pursuing a doctoral degree in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology in an eLearning setting. This is my first attempt at completing an online program and KU have been so helpful and incredibly patient with helping me get acquainted. It has been nearly 10 years since I completed my last two graduate degrees. There have been so many technologically advances implemented, it makes it difficult to get back into the swing of “student” life, while having a career. Nonetheless, I am eager to tackle those anxieties and with Keiser’s support, I am sure I will reach my goal. The faculty and staff have been so accommodating. They are an efficient team that works effectively together with assisting and serving the student body. Having a staff such as this, keeps the students encouraged, focused, and diligent about completing the goals.
