Troy University Masters Counseling Psychology

Troy University / Program in Counseling and Psychology is located in Troy, AL, in a rural setting.

Troy University was founded in 1887 with an act of the Alabama legislature establishing the Troy State Normal School as an institution to educate teachers. Extension courses for teachers were offered and teaching certificates granted until 1929 when the school’s charter was changed. At that time, it was renamed Troy State Teacher’s College. It was during that year that the college moved to its present site where Shackelford Hall, named for Edward Madison Shackelford, President of the school from 1899 to 1936, and Bibb Graves Hall, named for David Bibb Graves, Governor of Alabama, were dedicated.

When veterans returned from World War II to take advantage of the GI Bill, the enrollment of the college more than doubled, leading to degree programs in other disciplines besides teaching. In 1957, the State Board of Education changed the name of the school to Troy State College in recognition of the expanded degree offerings.

Extension courses offered at nearby Fort Rucker and later at Maxwell Air Force Base began the school’s long history with the military. A separate teaching center was established at Fort Rucker in 1961 and is today the Dothan Campus. Another established at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1965 led to today’s Montgomery Campus. These satellite campuses led to the creation of the TROY Global Campus which operates teaching sites outside of Alabama, and, in 1973, the university opened sites at military bases in Florida.

The school became Troy State University in 1967 and, in 1982, the Troy State University System was established. In 2004, the school was again renamed to Troy University to better reflect the worldwide mission of the institution and all campuses came under one accreditation in 2005.
