What Is a Vocational Nursing Program?

A vocational nursing program is an educational track that allows individuals to become nurses without having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. This type of program also allows students to complete their coursework at a faster pace than traditional degree-granting programs, which typically take four years or longer to complete. The types of jobs that graduates from these programs are qualified for include working in hospitals and other healthcare facilities as well as private practices around Sacramento and California as well as throughout the nation.

About the Vocational Nursing Program at Sacramento

Sacramento LVN Program: Vocational Nursing School in Sacramento, CA | Unitek

At [school name], we know that nursing is a lifelong journey—and we want to be there every step of the way. That’s why we offer a Vocational Nursing program in Sacramento, California that provides students with the skills they need to start a new career or get back into the workforce.

Whether you’re just graduating from high school or gearing up for a career change, our VN program in Sacramento has a lot to offer. The curriculum is varied and comprehensive, but it can be completed in as little as 12 months. If you prefer to attend night classes, we also offer an evening program with an expected length of 16 months.

The staff at our Sacramento campus will equip you with the skillset, knowledge, and experience you’ll need to take the VN licensure exam. We accomplish this by pairing professional instruction with lab work and simulation exercises. Through our Vocational Nursing program, we seek to place you on the path to success.

What You’ll Learn

The primary goal of our Vocational Nursing program is to prepare you for the NCLEX-PN licensing exam. Upon earning this credential, our graduates can seek entry-level employment as Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). During the program, you can expect to learn a variety of fundamental skills that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assessing and monitoring patients
  • Reporting adverse reactions to medication or treatment
  • Gather information from patients, such as their health history
  • Promoting good health habits
  • Supervising nursing assistants and aides
  • Administering prescribed medicines
  • Starting intravenous fluids
  • Providing care to ventilator-dependent patients

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) are different titles for the same job. They are both entry-level positions providing basic medical care under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. Practical Nursing (PN) and Vocational Nursing (VN) programs prepare graduates to take the NCLEX-PN. Passing the NCLEX-PN is required for licensure of both LPNs and LVNs.

The biggest difference between a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is actually the name. The term LVN is used in California and Texas, while LPN is used throughout the rest of the United States. So the difference in the title really just depends on where you are.

At Carrington College, the PN program at the Albuquerque and Boise campuses offers a certificate of achievement in as little as one year. The VN certificate program is offered at the Sacramento and San Jose campuses and an associate of science degree can be completed in as few as 17-27 months based on the program version.
