Bursaries

A bursary is an award which can help those who may not have otherwise been able to afford to attend university. NTU offers the following cash bursaries to prospective students:

NTU bursaries for 2021 entry

We award a cash bursary of ยฃ750 per year to eligible full-time UK and home undergraduate degree or foundation degree students who are starting their studies at NTU in 2021.

This ยฃ750 cash award to supplement living costs is paid to eligible students who:

  • are paying the maximum home tuition fee for their full-time undergraduate degree or foundation degree course
  • have a household income of ยฃ25,000 per year or less (as assessed by their UK national Student Finance Service)
  • are eligible to receive a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan from their UK National Student Finance Service.

This bursary is paid in each year of your course (except during any year-long work placement as part of a sandwich degree). Full terms and conditions will be published on the Studenthub.

How to apply

Thereโ€™s no separate application process to apply for an NTU Bursary. Your eligibility is automatically assessed as long as youโ€™ve applied and are eligible for a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan from your national Student Finance Service.

We should automatically receive confirmation of your eligibility provided that you havenโ€™t withdrawn consent to share financial information with the University for the purposes of assessing bursary entitlement.

If we award you a bursary, youโ€™ll receive written confirmation from us.

NTU Care Leavers and Foyer Resident Bursary

The University awards a NTU Care Leaver Bursary of ยฃ1,000 to help towards living costs to eligible students who start their studies at NTU in 2021 and:

  • have been in the care of a local authority in the UK (or have been looked after by relatives who have a court order to look after you in the UK) at some point since the age of 16; or
  • have been a Foyer resident in the UK; and
  • are under 25 on 1 September 2021; and
  • are enrolled on a full-time undergraduate degree course or foundation degree course commencing in 2021.

The NTU Care Leaver and Foyer Resident Bursary will be available for each year of full-time study, subject to meeting the terms and conditions.

NTU Estranged Student Bursary

The University will be awarding an NTU Estranged Student Bursary of ยฃ1000 to help towards living costs to eligible students who start their studies at NTU in 2021 and:

  • have been financially assessed by their UK national Student Finance Service as an independent student on the grounds of estrangement from their parents; and
  • are under 25 on 1 September 2021; and
  • are enrolled on a full-time undergraduate degree course or foundation degree course commencing in 2021.

The NTU Estranged Student Bursary will be available for each year of full-time study, subject to continued eligibility.

Scholarships are usually awarded to help finance a student’s university education. These are awarded to exceptional students with achievements or high potential in both academic and extra curricular fields.

Sport Scholarships

NTU offers a number of scholarship awards each year to high-performing student athletes from a range of different sports for undergraduate and postgraduate study. Each award is tailored to the needs of the athlete to ensure that everything is put in place to help them to achieve both academic and sporting success while at NTU.

Eligibility

NTU sport scholarships are awarded on a case by case basis, priority is given to individual’s whose sport features within the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme.

To qualify for a sport scholarship, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at NTU, or in the process of applying to become an NTU student for the next academic year
  • Compete at a regional, national or international standard in your sport or show evidence of significant future sporting potential

Advice for applicants

When applying for a sport scholarship at NTU please be aware of the following:

  • Experience level is not a guarantee of a successful application
  • Sport scholars must compete for NTU in all competitions and attend all club training sessions
  • If you are unsuccessful in your application the first time around you can apply again in the succeeding academic years
  • A sport scholarship is valid for one academic year only; sport scholars must reapply if they wish to continue to receive support

Scholarships for prospective students

You don’t need to wait until you’ve started your course to apply for an NTU music scholarship. Scholarships for prospective students

You can apply for one of our music scholarships if you have received or firmly accepted an offer to join an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate degree course starting in September 2021 or January 2022.

All scholarships provide free, extra-curricular music tuition from an NTU Music tutor, during your studies.

NTU Music Scholarship

Our NTU Music Scholarship is designed to support proficient musicians in the continuing development of their music practice.

This scholarship is not for a set duration, and we may award free music tuition for a number of months, a full academic year, or up to the duration of your course.

All tuition is offered from our purpose-built Music Centre in University Hall, on the City Campus.

Who can apply?

As well as having an offer to study on an eligible course, you also must be a Grade 6 or 7 standard vocalist; or a Grade 7 or 8 instrumentalist.

You don’t need to have taken and passed exams, but your audition performance should demonstrate that you are singing or playing to this level.

How do I apply?

Due to COVID-19, our application and audition process is currently online.

  1. Video yourself singing or playing two contrasting pieces of music (a maximum of ten minutes combined) and upload these to a video sharing platform like Vimeo or YouTube. You’ll need the web addresses handy for your application form.
  2. Complete our Music Scholarship Application Form for offer holders and submit it by the deadline.

The deadline to apply is 11.59 pm on Thursday 10 June 2021.

All applicants will be notified by Friday 18 June 2021, to let them know whether or not they have been shortlisted for a scholarship.

If you are shortlisted, we’ll invite you to attend a short online interview with the Director of Music.

All shortlisted students will find out whether or not they have been successful by Friday 25 June 2021.

Scholarships for current students

An NTU music scholarship provides you with the opportunity to develop your vocal or instrumental skills with one of our expert tutors. A scholarship could pay for lessons for a couple of months, or up to the length of your course.

NTU Music Scholarship

An NTU Music Scholarship provides you with paid vocal or instrumental tuition from one of our experienced teachers. We offer tuition for voice, piano, strings, brass, guitar, bass, percussion, drums, and woodwind.

Our scholarships are of varying lengths. We may award music tuition for a number of months, a full academic year, or up to the length of your course.

Successful candidates are expected to join at least one of NTU’s ensembles, and show full commitment to this and their music tuition.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate course.
  • You are a vocalist who has studied to Grade 6 or 7 standard; or an instrumentalist who has studied to Grade 7 or 8 standard.

NTU Accompanist Scholarship

This award is given to just one or two students every year. It lasts one academic year, and features exclusive tuition with the University’s accompanist.

If you are are successful you will have the opportunity to play in Chamber Choir and Choir rehearsals, and accompany vocalists and instrumentalists in our free lunchtime concert series.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate course.
  • You have studies piano to at least Grade 8 standard.

Undergraduate and postgraduate international applicants

Terms and conditions for international scholarships

  1. To be eligible for consideration for an international scholarship, you must have been offered a place on an eligible course (excluding GDL, LPC, BTC and exchange students); and be classed as an overseas student for tuition fee purposes (โ€œInternational Studentโ€).
  2. Nottingham Trent International College (NTIC) progression students are not eligible to apply for a scholarship.
  3. Please do not send your scholarship application before or with your application to study at NTU. You must have received an offer of a place on an eligible course with NTU before submitting your scholarship application.
  4. These scholarships are for international applicants only. Please visit ntu.ac.uk/scholarships for information on scholarships for UK applicants.
  5. If you are studying at an institution that has a partnership agreement with NTU you may be eligible to receive an automatic partnership tuition fee discount โ€“ you may still apply for the Postgraduate Masters Scholarships for up to 50% of your tuition fees and should do so using this application form. However, you cannot combine the automatic partnership tuition fee discount with the Postgraduate Masters Scholarship.  If you are awarded a Postgraduate Masters scholarship of up to 50% of the tuition fee you will not be eligible to receive the automatic partnership tuition fee discount. If you are not awarded a Postgraduate Masters scholarship you will automatically receive the partnership tuition fee discount.
  6. International students who receive sponsorship (i.e. some or all of your tuition fees are being paid) by an employer, government or a funding body (full / part) are not eligible to apply for this scholarship award.
  7. Applicants may only apply for a scholarship once per academic year per offer of a place on a qualifying course.
  8. Applicants are only eligible to apply for a scholarship if you are an international student and are due to enrol on the first year of a course (or year 2 or 3 of an undergraduate course in the case of advanced entry) in January or September 2021 or January 2022. International students enrolled prior to January 2021 and due to progress onto the second, third or fourth year their course of study at NTU in September 2021 or January 2022 or repeating the first year of study are not eligible to apply.
  9. Applicants must be an international student starting a new course of study at NTU. We cannot consider applications from international students who were enrolled on a course of study at NTU prior to January 2021 unless they are progressing onto a new course of study at NTU.
  10. Applications received after the 16:00 GMT (4 pm) deadline will automatically be considered for the next available deadline. For example, application forms submitted after the first deadline and before the second deadline, will be considered for the second deadline.
  11. Applications received after the final deadline will not be considered.
  12. This application form is for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses only. Please do not use this form to apply for research funding.
  13. International students who make an application for a scholarship and are not successful will automatically be considered for any other scholarship for which they may be eligible.
  14. The scholarship(s) will be applied as a reduction tuition fee in the first year of study at NTU. If you are awarded a scholarship, your tuition fee will be adjusted before you enrol. If you are a part-time student your tuition fee will be adjusted proportionally at the start of each academic year.
  15. If you are awarded any other scholarship, bursary and / or tuition fee reduction from NTU the maximum scholarship awarded will not exceed 50% of the tuition fee, with the exception of candidates who are awarded a Sport Scholarship.
  16. If you have been made an offer of a place to study on a one year full-time or two year part-time postgraduate Masters course, or a two year full-time postgraduate Masters course which incorporates a year-long work placement and you are awarded any other scholarship, bursary and / or tuition fee reduction from NTU the maximum amount awarded will not exceed 50% of the tuition fee, with the exception of candidates who are awarded a Sport Scholarship.
  17. If you are awarded an Undergraduate Scholarship with an award for each year of study, the award will be deducted from your tuition fee at the start of each year. You must successfully complete each year of the course in order to continue to receive this. Scholarships are not applied when a placement year is undertaken but will resume for your final year of study.
  18. The scholarship is not transferable and will not be awarded if you choose to transfer to a different course of study at NTU.
  19. Applicants will be informed whether they have (or have not) been awarded a scholarship (and of the value of the scholarship award if they have been awarded) within four weeks of the application deadline dates.
  20. The scholarship will be applied to the tuition fee when an applicant accepts their scholarship offer, accepts and meets the conditions of their course offer, and are eligible to enrol on the course.
  21. Scholarships are competitive and selection is based on the information provided on the scholarship application form. It is, therefore, of great importance that you give your scholarship statement careful thought and preparation, and that you refer to the criteria provided.
  22. NTUโ€™s decision in all matters relating to the scholarship is final.
  23. If your scholarship application is successful, we may ask you to become a student ambassador, or to appear in online and / or printed marketing materials for NTU. For example, providing a student profile and a photograph which may be used to promote NTU and NTUโ€™s scholarship schemes and courses. Your name and course will be printed in the Scholarships Awards Celebration scheme. If you do not wish us to use your data in this manner, please notify us by emailing international@ntu.ac.uk.
  24. In the event that you are awarded a scholarship and fail to complete an eligible course which has received the scholarship and choose to retake the course or undertake another eligible course then the scholarship will not be applied again.
  25. In the event that you fail to complete a course and the scholarship was not applied (i.e. you did not pay the tuition fees, or the tuition fees were reimbursed) then subject to the eligibility criteria, the scholarship may be available should you choose to retake the course or undertake another eligible course. You must re-apply for the scholarship.
  26. If you withdraw from your course while owing a proportion of your tuition fees to NTU, application of the scholarship shall be at the discretion of NTU and the scholarship may be withdrawn.
  27. Eligible postgraduate Masters courses are Master level awards (full-time and part-time only).  Excluded courses: LLM BTC, LLM LPC (full-time, part-time, distance learning), LLM (distance learning), MSc Human Resource Management (part-time), MA International Relations (Online), MA Social Work, MA Advanced Social Work Practice, MA Careers Leaders Training Programme, MArch Architecture, MSc Biomedical Science (flexible learning).  Please contact ntu.scholarships@ntu.ac.uk to confirm whether your course is eligible for the scheme. NTU reserve the right to exclude other courses at their discretion. Errors and omissions accepted.

Nottingham Trent International College Scholarship

If you’re an NTIC student you’re not eligible to apply for an NTU international scholarship.

However we do have a number of NTIC scholarships that you can apply for. These range from ยฃ500 to ยฃ1000 and are based on your achievement while at NTIC.
