Start Term: Fall

As a pharmaceutical scientist, you play an important role in discovering and developing new medications that impact lives. This program provides students with a broad-based education in the basic biological and pharmaceutical sciences with a focus on core areas of industrial pharmacy including drug discovery, research and development, and manufacturing.

During this full-time, four-year undergraduate program, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside professional experts in modern laboratories equipped with advanced technology for hands-on education and research. You’ll graduate ready to begin your career or continue your education with a Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences or another postgraduate program in biotechnology or regulatory affairs.

Students with 12 or more college credits may transfer in to the first, second, or third year of the program. Courses must have been completed at a regionally accredited college or university with a grade of C or better for transfer. Math and science courses taken more than ten years prior to the anticipated date of matriculation to MCPHS will not be accepted.

While there are no specific required courses for entry into the first year of our program, the admission committee will look for success in any math and science courses you have already taken. If you complete any of the courses listed below, you may receive transfer credit and your first year course load may be lighter. However, due to the block registration nature of MCPHS programs, entering the first year of the program with transfer credits will not change the total length of your program. Courses, other than elective courses, may not be moved forward in your schedule.

  • Organic Chemistry I & II with lab (8 credits)
  • Microbiology with lab (3 credits)
  • Introduction to Speech (3 credits)
  • Statistics (3 credits) (Acceptable substitutions include basic statistics, biostatistics, psychological statistics, economic statistics)
  • Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)
  • Physics I with lab (4 credits if calculus-based or 8 credits if algebra-based)
  • Economics (3 credits) (Acceptable courses include microeconomics, macroeconomics, or general economics)
  • Humanities Elective (3 credits) (Acceptable courses include Literature, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Ethics, Religious Studies, Select Fine Arts, Advanced Level Languages)
  • Behavioral Science Elective (3 credits) (Acceptable courses include any upper-level psychology course)
  • Social Science Elective (3 credits) (Acceptable courses include History, Political Science, Government, American Studies, Geography, Anthropology, Economics)

Dual Degree Option

Academically motivated students may choose to apply to the Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences program – an accelerated master’s degree available only to MCPHS BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences students – at the end of their third year and earn a dual degree in just five years. The master’s program allows students to further develop their competency and knowledge in basic laboratory manipulations and experiment design, experimental and technical record keeping and reporting, common analytical equipment, regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical economics, and more.  

The job outlook for medical scientists, which includes pharmaceutical researchers, is expected to grow by 8% through 2024. And, as a master’s trained scientist or researcher you could enjoy a starting salary of $82,000 or more.
