Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

The University of Minnesota Veterinary School program allows student to choose from one of five areas: Small Animal, Equine, Food Animal, Mixed Animal, and Interdisciplinary.
University of Minnesota Veterinary School’s 4-year DVM curriculum was recently revised. The first two years focuses on a broad science background – and includes study of the normal animal, diseases, prevention, alleviation, and clinical therapy of diseases. The last two years include clinical and professional practice including the final year of 13 months of clinical rotations and up to 12 weeks of externship experiences.

There are over 70 rotation offerings. Rotation categories include:

7. School History
The University of Minnesota first began a veterinary program in 1888 with 23 students. However, due to the expenses, the program was disbanded just 4 years later. After a few more failed attempts at a program, the School of Veterinary Medicine was finally established in 1947 in thanks to legislature.

Admissions Formula
Admissions includes three evaluations:

1. Academic Measures
2. Non-academic Measures
3. Interviews

Academic Measures

Each of the following will be weighted equally –

• Prerequisite course GPA – it is recommended to have a minimum GPA of 2.75
• Last 45-semester credit GPA – it is recommended to have a minimum GPA of 2.75
• GRE scores – it is recommended to have a score above the 35th percentile

Non-Academic Measures

• Knowledge of vet profession
• Experience with animals
• Maturity and reliability
• Work experience
• Community involvement
• Extracurricular activities
• Letters of recommendation

Interviews

Students who meet the requirements for the academic and non-academic measures will be invited to interview. The interview is one hour long and uses questions that focus on the aptitude for success as a vet.

Letters of Recommendation/Evaluations (a total of 3)

1. Veterinarian (at least 1 is required)
2. Others of student’s choice who know the applicant well

Before you Apply

bachelor’s degree is NOT required; neither is a specific major as long as the required courses are completed. There is no required major when applying to University of Minnesota Veterinary School. Math and science prerequisite classes must be completed within ten years of the application; however all pre-requisite courses must be completed with a C- or better.

All pre-requisite courses should be completed with a C- or better. Up to five prerequisite courses may be pending completion during the fall and spring of the application year.

Tuition for instate MSU vet students is $29,804 and an average student takes 4.5 years of undergraduate education, along with four years of veterinary medicine before graduating. That means the average loan debt for an in-state vet student is $159,848, MSU spokeswoman Kim Ward said.
