Apply for DMD and Postbaccalaureate Degree Programs
Application requirements for those interested in the Four-year DMD and Postbaccalaureate, as well as internationally trained dentists interested in the Advanced Standing Program, can be found below.
How to Apply
The Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry uses the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). To apply, submit the AADSAS application. There is an application fee of $245 (in 2018) for the first dental school you choose. Each additional school you apply to is $102.
In addition to the materials listed below, the committee considers college or university attendance, undergraduate academic record and course load, and previous work experience. Students who have completed a baccalaureate degree are given preference in the admissions process. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English on the DAT as well as during the interview process.
Admissions Requirements
Annually, 140 first-year students are admitted to the DMD program at the Kornberg School of Dentistry. These students are selected from a large number of applicants—more than 2,500—who apply each year. All applicants are evaluated and scored using qualitative and quantitative criteria. The combined score and holistic review approach ranks the applicants and determines the tier for interview and admission.
Supporting Materials
The supplementary application will be emailed directly to the student once the preliminary AADSAS application is verified. The application includes the opportunity to share information about life experiences, such as civil or military service, post-baccalaureate or master’s experiences, and previous clinical and humanistic experiences. Transcript
Students will be required to submit official transcripts from all undergraduate coursework to AADSAS during the application process. Coursework
Candidates must have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours from an accredited college or university. A bachelor’s degree in the sciences is preferred. A minimum of eight semester hours, with lab experience, in each of the following subjects is required.
- Biology
- General chemistry
- Organic chemistry
- Physics
Six credit hours in English are also required, and it is highly recommended that applicants have exposure to advanced science courses, particularly anatomy, biochemistry, histology and physiology. Standardized Test Scores
Every applicant must take the DAT. Kornberg recommends that you take your test no later than Aug. 31 of the application year. DAT scores are an important component considered in the admissions process. Applications will not be reviewed without reported DAT scores. Scores more than two years old at the time of application will not be accepted. A Canadian DAT score report is required for those applicants who take the Canadian DAT. Recommendations
Students are required to submit two letters of recommendation from science professors or pre-health committee members.
Interviews
Highly qualified candidates are invited for a formal interview. Chosen applicants will meet with current students, tour the facility and review financial aid and housing procedures. Interviews give potential students the opportunity to learn more about Temple and they allow the Admissions Committee to learn more about applicants, and gauge their motivation, approach to problems and communication skills.
Acceptance
Decisions are made Dec. 1 (or the first business day of December). Most acceptance notices are routinely mailed by June 1 of the year for which the application is made. Upon acceptance, a nonrefundable deposit is required to hold a seat in the class. Please note, there is no option to defer admission.
Application Deadlines
Completed Dental School applications must be received by Jan. 15 of the year for which the application is made.
Transfer student applications are accepted between Sept. 1 and Jan. 15.

Advanced Education General Dentistry Certificate (Graduate)
Expand your knowledge and refine your clinical competency and judgment with a 12-month graduate certificate program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) from Temple University’s Kornberg School of Dentistry. The program is designed to accommodate six recent dental school graduates who function in the program as residents as well as applicants who hold a DMD or DDS degree from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental school. Dentists who hold a BDS, DMD or DDS from an international dental school not accredited by CODA may apply to the AEGD program for international dentists.
The field of dentistry is rapidly evolving, with new restorative technologies being pioneered and patients who live longer and have more complex medication and healthcare needs. The program takes you beyond the four-year DMD curriculum and strengthens your knowledge base and clinical judgment, helping you keep pace with advances in the field. While primary patient care provides the majority of residents’ learning experience, you’ll also further enhance your diagnostic skills and ability to develop patient-appropriate treatment plans through the didactic curriculum and weekly seminars covering treatment planning, literature reviews and topics in general dentistry.
Accepted applicants receive a stipend of $38,500. Residents train to operate effectively and collaborate efficiently within cross-functional healthcare teams while honing their ability to provide emergency, multidisciplinary and patient-centered oral healthcare to a diverse community of patients with a broad spectrum of conditions and needs.
Certificate students acquire robust clinical experience by working in the AEGD Clinic, which operates as a stand-alone clinic with a staff of dental assistants and hygienists. Rotations in postgraduate endodontology and periodontology and implantology supplement the comprehensive patient care assignment in the AEGD clinical facility. Dedicated faculty, who are experts in their fields and who are full-time, tenured members of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, instruct and support residents throughout their clinical development and treatment of complex cases.
AEGD Program for International Dentists
The Kornberg School of Dentistry offers a postgraduate opportunity for dentists who hold a BDS, DMD or DDS degree from an international dental school not accredited by CODA. This comprehensive program includes both clinical and didactic training, and the flexibility to attain an optional Oral Health Sciences MS.
Residents in this one-year program also have the flexibility to pursue an optional second year of AEGD training and/or to earn an optional Master’s of Science degree in Oral Health Sciences. Those interested in the optional MS degree must apply to both the first-year AEGD and MS programs concurrently. If accepted to both programs, the tuition for the MS degree program will be included in the AEGD tuition. Learn more about how to apply to the AEGD program for international applicants.
