Maryland is often referred to as “America in Miniature” because of the varied geographic features in the relatively small state: mountains in the west, farmland in the east, beaches to the south and cities in the central region. The nickname could easily be applied to the many higher education institutions in Maryland as well. Notable research universities, small liberal arts colleges and the Maryland Institute College of Art are located in the state. The United States Naval Academy, one of America’s five federal military academies, is located in the state capital of Annapolis. Colleges are located throughout Maryland, though many are located in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
