History

Founded in 1950 and originally known as The University College of Addis Ababa, the university was renamed Haile Selassie I University after Ethiopia’s 1974 revolution. It was founded by Emperor Haile Selassie I, who also laid the foundation stone for its first building on 15 November 1956.

The university is located on a campus of 375 hectares (941 acres)[1] and has an estimated population of over 30,000 students.[2] It offers degrees in natural science, social science, humanities and law.[3]

The establishment of Haile Selassie University had been proposed and drafted as early as 1939 by an education commission that was established by Emperor Haile Selassie I following a visit to Eduardo Mondlane at Lourenรงo Marques, Mozambique. The schoolโ€™s founding mission was to provide โ€œinstruction in literature and the sciences and practical training in professional and technical pursuits[3]โ€ with a focus on freedom and democracy. The schoolโ€™s original name of โ€œThe University College of Addis Ababaโ€ was changed on 23 November 1961 to โ€œHaile Selassie I Universityโ€; after the 1974 revolution it was renamed to โ€œAddis Ababa Universityโ€.
