AEGD Program at The University of Maryland School of Dentistry

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program offers a program in advanced general dentistry for internationally trained dentists. This is a six-month program which is designed to enhance the training and education of internationally trained dentists in general   dentistry. 

After successful completion of this six-month program, the University of  Maryland School of Dentistry, Office of Continuing Education, will award 125 hours continuing education credits, divided up into subject codes in accordance with the Academy of General Dentistry guidelines.  The program is full time for the entire six months.

The program participants will attend short-courses in many areas of general dentistry.  Their faculty will be drawn from the Department of General Dentistry as well as other departments.  Some courses will be didactic and some will involve participation.

The AEGD program for internationally- trained dentists offers advanced and intense training in advanced general dentistry with special emphasis on implants, dental materials, aesthetic dentistry, digital dentistry, lasers and endodontics.  Although the participants do not work directly on patients, they work on surrogate tooth and jaw substitutes such as typodonts, models, occlusion, extracted teeth and porcine mandibles.  They also observe and assist AEGD residents as they treat patients.

AEGD Program at Columbia College of Dental Medicine

Overview

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Postdoctoral Program is a 12-month certificate program with an optional second year open to US/Canadian and foreign-trained dentists. This intensive clinical and academically rigorous full time program is designed to prepare accepted applicants to deliver comprehensive patient centric care for all patients, including those with complex and special needs. Residents can expect a collaborative and robust program with dedicated facilities led by world-class experts who uphold the highest standards of teaching and learning in Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Implant Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry.

The program offers a second-year position for residents who are interested in an additional year of training. Second-year residents will have the opportunity enhance their clinical skills & management of more complex patients.

Requirements

In accordance with our standards of excellence, accepted applicants must adhere to the rules and bylaws of Columbia University Health Sciences and New York Presbyterian Hospital. To qualify for the AEGD certificate, each resident is required to attend all didactic and clinical sessions in their schedule, manage all cases in their portfolio and pass all academic courses and clinical competencies. Ongoing evaluations will include reviews of each resident’s patient roster and portfolio. Residents will also be assessed on their clinical experience, patient management, and clinical competencies. Residents must keep logs of their experiences during rotations with other departments, and describe their learning during triannual assessments with the faculty. 

Residents are eligible for all Columbia University holidays and are granted 20 days of vacation each academic year. To request time off, residents must submit a vacation request at least one month in advance. No vacations will be granted in June.

Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry (TUKSoD) offers a postgraduate opportunity for dentists who hold a BDS, DMD, or DDS degree from an international dental school not accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). This comprehensive program includes both clinical and didactic training, and the flexibility to attain an optional Master’s of Science (MSc) degree in Oral Health Sciences. 

Offered to internationally trained dentists, this is a tuition-based, one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. Residents in this one-year program also have the flexibility to pursue an optional second year of AEGD training and/or to earn an optional Master’s of Science (MSc) degree in Oral Health Sciences. Those interested in the optional MSc degree must apply to both the first-year AEGD and MSc programs concurrently. If accepted to both programs, the tuition for the MSc degree program will be included in the AEGD tuition.

A first-year AEGD resident may choose to be considered for a second year AEGD with a letter of intent forwarded to the program director. Those enrolled in the MSc degree program who are successfully admitted to a second year of AEGD will continue to have their Master’s degree tuition included in the AEGD program tuition. Those who either do not apply for, or are not accepted into the second year AEGD may complete their MSc degree at the published per credit rate. 

The TUKSoD AEGD program continues to be very successful in developing the dentist’s critical analytical and technical skill, didactic knowledge and clinical acumen. At the foundation of its success is a well-supported modern clinic, experienced faculty and very large patient pool. A recently renovated 15 chair suite welcomes patients with a modern style and provides efficient delivery of dental care. Contained within the suite are private surgical rooms, large lecture room, a support laboratory, and office space for both administrative staff and residents. Residents benefit from an ample number of experienced and dedicated faculty members who support the active clinical and didactic curriculum. Representing a diversity of experiences across multiple disciplines, the faculty work together as a team to support the professional development of the residents and excellent dental care for patients. Clinical rotations through other departments will support the understanding patient care in each dental discipline. TUKSoD serves tens of thousands of patients annually, which creates a rich environment for AEGD residents develop and achieve their professional goals. This AEGD postdoctoral program is recognized for the excellence of its clinical and didactic curricular components. We are part of the Temple University Health Science Center, and our practice base includes many outpatients with complex medical histories who are referred to our residents for the dental care they require before undergoing cardiac or transplant surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or hip and knee replacement surgery. The AEGD Faculty members are dedicated to providing a learning environment that encourages each resident to maximize his or her clinical potential, in order to undergo the metamorphosis from a senior dental student to a professional practice colleague.

A newly redesigned Masters degree program takes advantage of the wide range of scholarly activities at TUKSoD, and degree candidates are able to incorporate flexibility in their curriculum. The program will capitalize on the breadth and depth of the many varied disciplines at the Kornberg School. The program will offer students the choice to either survey a range of oral health disciplines, or pursue a special interest in one particular discipline. Masters degree candidates may satisfy their required credit hours of coursework in a manner that serves their interests and future career goals. Research mentors are available in any of the academic departments and any of the CODA accredited advanced training certificate programs, including: Endodontology, Orthodontics, Periodontology and Implantology, or Public Health.  Oral Health Sciences represent areas of study far beyond the traditional view of dentistry. 

The AEGD/MSc program combines these two sought-after programs into one mutually supportive program. The residents/students enrolled in this two-year program will be offered the resources and timetable to support their successful completion of an AEGD certificate and an MSc degree simultaneously. The joint schedule of coursework includes the credit hours required to satisfy the MSc over two years, culminating in a thesis presentation. Time is dedicated to research in the second year, as the participant’s research project gathers momentum and requires more attention for a timely completion. The student will continue in a second year AEGD to grow clinical skills while completing their research project.

The standard process for international applicants to this postgraduate program includes an in-person interview and a practical simulation exercise to demonstrate their level of technical skill (i.e. a bench test).
