Alice Lloyd College

Alice Lloyd Collegeย is aย privateย work collegeย inย Pippa Passes, Kentucky. It was co-founded by the journalistย Alice Spencer Geddes Lloydย (a native ofย Cambridge, Massachusetts) andย June Buchananย (a native ofย New York City) in 1923, at first under the name ofย Caney Junior College. Founded as an institution to educate leaders inย Appalachiaย locally, it became aย bachelor’s degree-granting institution in the early 1980s. Alice Lloyd College isย accreditedย by theย Southern Association of Colleges and Schoolsย (SACS).

Academics

As of 2014, Alice Lloyd College has implemented 18 major degree programs and eight pre-professional programs into its curricula.ย The student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1.

Ninety-five percent of Alice Lloyd College graduates are accepted into graduate and professional schools.ย Seventy-five percent of Alice Lloyd College graduates are the first in their families to obtain an undergraduate degree.

Alice Lloyd College was ranked number 7 in Regional Colleges South and number 2 in Best Value Schools, as of the 2018 edition ofย U.S. News & World Report’sย rankings.

Student finances and required work

Although Alice Lloyd College does not rely on any direct financial support from the state or federal governments, it does accept students using federal and state student financial aid such as federalย Pell Grants.ย 16 percent of students receive education loans, for an average of approximately $800. According to the Project on Student Debt, each of Alice Lloyd’s 2009 graduates carried an average debt of $6,500, which is well below the statewide average of $19,112 and the national average of $24,000.The college, which accepted 262 of 6,337 applicants for the class of 2017, guarantees tuition to full-time students from an area consisting of 108 counties inย Central Appalachia.

Students are required to work part-time regardless of financial situation. They are given jobs such as janitorial staff, office assistant, tutor, craft maker, resident advisor, maintenance, grounds or working in the cafeteria (Hunger Din). In addition to on-campus jobs, students can work at off-campus outreach projects.ย Students are required to work at least 160 hours per semester. The college is one of eightย work collegesย in theย United Statesย and one of two in Kentucky (Berea Collegeย being the other) that have mandatory work-study programs.

Students from 108 counties in theย Appalachian Mountainsย region of Kentucky,ย Ohio,ย Tennessee,ย Virginiaย andย West Virginiaย pay no tuition through the Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship.

Student life

The dormitories house about 600 students, with rental prices averaging $1,900 annually. Alice Lloyd College requires students to live in gender-separatedย dormitoriesย and only allows the opposite sex into a gender-specific dorm during “open houses,” after room checks have been made. Room checks consist of twoย resident advisorsย going into each room and making sure that it is clean and it does not contain any illegal substances. The college is located inย Knott County, Kentucky, aย dry county,ย thus alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Professional dress is required of all students on central campus until 2:00ย p.m. every Tuesday and for all convocation programs.

While this college is not affiliated with anyย religious denomination, the college’s mission statement emphasizes the role ofย Christianย values.ย In addition, the college offers coursework inย religionn ย and has a chapter ofย Baptist Collegiate Ministries.

The collegeย choirย is called the “Voices of Appalachia.” The choir, formed in 1962, holds a tour annually in the spring, performing hymns and ballads. The choir has made several media appearances, includingย NBC’sย Todayย andย CBS News Sunday Morning.

The college offers a series of speakers and events called convocations. Students are required to attend six convocations per semester.

Campus

The Commodore Slone Building, at one time housing the science program and most recently theย June Buchanan School, the college’s K-12ย prep school, was renovated to house the business program. The Business & Technology Center was completed in the fall of 2009 and was dedicated on October 10, 2009.

ALC is committed to seeing that international students have an enriching educational experience. To that end, we will gladly consider international student applications.

ALC requires students to have a minimum of 17 on the ACT or 810 on the new SAT, as well as a 2.25 core GPA from high school. International students must also submit their TOEFL score and a certificate of finance for evaluation by the Director of Admissions. The certificate of finance must also be supported by a bank statement. In order to participate in theย Student Work Program, all international students must have an F1 VISA and prior to enrollment must obtain a US-issued Social Security Number. This can be researched atย www.sss.gov.

Because Alice Lloyd College was founded to serve students from the Appalachian region of the United States, a limited number of international students are admitted. ALC is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant, alien students. Students from other countries should submit the International Student Admissions Packet (pdf) for evaluation by the Director of Admissions no later than May 1st for enrollment in the fall semester and no later than October 1st for the spring semester.

A $3500 (US) deposit must be submitted prior to issuance of the SEVIS I-20 to assure you have access to money in case of emergency. This deposit, plus interest, is refunded to the student at the end of your college career, providing you do not owe the College.ย ย International students areย noteligible for the Appalachian Leaders Scholarship, which is theย tuition guarantee scholarship.ย The only financial aid available to international students is the money earned fromย work-studyย performed throughout the semester.โ€
