Crawford College of Art and Design was founded in 1852 as the Cork School of Design by the Cork painter James Brenan. As a part of the Crawford family’s social project to create a flourishing cultural environment in Ireland, it was originally financed by William Crawford (a wealthy businessman) who provided a building for its use on Mardyke Walk (now known as Mardyke Street).
