Credit recognition and transfer

Recognition of credits for equivalent modules obtained through other professionally accredited relevant BSc programmes is not automatic, but may be approved after an evaluation based on the following criteria:

  • Module credits (at least same amount of credits or more)
  • NQF level (same NQF level)
  • Similarity of module content, and
  • Shelve life of the modules (how long ago it was completed)

Recognition of modules cannot be guaranteed prior to registration. It is the responsibility of the student to apply for credit recognition and provide the curriculum/syllabus that indicates the above criteria. The following general rules apply: No more than 50 percent of the credits may be transferred from the completed qualification(s) to another qualification, subject to the provision that; (aa) at least 50 percent of the credits for the new qualification be earned at this University; and (bb) a maximum of 25 percent of the credits accrued at the highest NQF level in the previously completed qualification(s) be acknowledged for another qualification.

With regards to an incomplete qualification, all the applicable credits may be granted for the new qualification, except in respect of a student from another institution of higher education, in which case no more than 50 percent of the credits required to obtain the qualification may be recognised from those modules completed at the other institution. In the latter case, there is a restriction of a maximum of 25 percent of credits aquired and earned at the highest NQF level.

General UFS Rules on period of registration also apply. Note that General Rules are subject to change.

Appeals

All appeals pertaining to the implementation of the General Rules are considered by the relevant Faculty Readmission Appeals Committee, and the decision of this committee will be final. Students who wish to appeal for readmission should contact the relevant Programme Director for guidance.
