There are schools, internships, residencies and more! In fact, the whole process can take more than 10 years, Yes … more than 10 years and none of them are so easy.
Well, you probably know that entering medical school is extremely difficult. But admission to medical school/med school admission is just the beginning!
Also, if you want to join the best medical schools in Australia, you will have to start preparing in high school. Do not be discouraged if your qualifications are not up to expectation. There are many alternative ways to help you achieve your final dream of becoming a doctor.
Medical education in Australia is provided by the medical faculties of several universities, accredited by the Australian Medical Council. There are undergraduate and graduate medical programs. The first requires the entrance examination i.e. Undergraduate Medical Examination Test (UMAT) in Medicine and Health Sciences. While the second requires the entrance examination of the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
With that said, let’s take a closer look at what it really takes to become a doctor in Australia.Table Of Content [show]
What GPA do I need for medical school Australia?
Preparation for Medical School
#1. Complete the 12th grade
It is important that you complete (high school or university) or your college degree.
#2. Complete all the pre-requisite subjects
It is important to take science prerequisites during your high school or undergraduate degree because it is much more difficult to complete after graduation. Do not forget that the choice of mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and high-level English will be very useful during your medical studies.
The University of Sydney has just announced that students who wish to study BMedSc (bachelor’s degree) and a doctorate in medicine (graduate program) must meet these new requirements before 2020.
Students must complete the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) Grade 4 (not general mathematics) or achieve similar results in interstate IB or equivalent subjects to enroll in various courses.
To help you evaluate interstate equivalents, the table below has been copied from the University of Sydney website. We recommend that you visit the site to get complete information about the new prerequisites and the courses to which they apply.
#3 Get involved
Medical schools do not judge applications on work experience. But gaining some work experience demonstrates that you have considered whether the demands of a caring profession is for you. And also that you are committed to studying medicine.
#4 Take the Medical School Entrance Exams (UCAT or GAMSAT)
UCAT
From 2019 students interested in studying Medicine, Dentistry and some other Clinical Science courses at a member university of the UMAT Consortium will sit the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) as part of their admissions process.
The new test will replace the UMAT (Undergraduate Medical and Health Sciences Admission Test) from 2019 (for university entry in 2020).
Important information about the new test, the UCAT ANZ, is available here on our website. More detailed information will be published prior to January 2020.
GAMSAT
Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test (GAMSAT) produces free guides and preparation resources for applicants. Many private companies produce resources and run courses to prepare for these high-stakes tests, which can be very expensive.
The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) believes that high-cost preparation courses are not necessary. Especially to achieve an adequate score and may create inequality for those students from low-socioeconomic and/or rural backgrounds.
GAMSAT 2020 entry: Registrations for the 23 March 2020 test will close on 2 February 2020.

The Path to Becoming a Doctor in Australia
There are many factors that determine whether or not you will enter the best medical schools in Australia. And the subjects you study in high school and how well you perform in them are one of these factors
Most colleges require at least biology and chemistry, as well as at least an English course, a maths course, and a physics course.
Some may want to review your application comprehensively, but others will review your grades before considering anything else. So make sure your grades are wonderful!
Australian medical schools require an ATAR score of at least 90 (better is the quality of the university, the better the cut-off of ATAR). But it is not because you meet the ATAR cut-off of a university that will make you will enter. Basically, try to get the highest possible ATAR!
By contrast, in Australia, your high school grades are not as important as you should have completed a one-year degree before applying to a medical school. The degree’s GPA of your degree determines whether or not you go to medical school.
Pathways to Medical School
There are two types of medical titles available in Australia:
- Five-year or six-year Undergraduate Bachelor degree
- Equivalent professional entry Masters level degree
Medical education is provided by the university medical schools accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), which currently has 21 in Australia. Several medical schools have recently adopted a doctoral program in medicine (MD or MChD) in which graduates receive a master’s degree. All medical degrees offered by medical schools in Australia are equivalent to starting to practice as a doctor.
Undergraduate Entry Medical Programs
In general, all medical programs require the completion of Grade 12 or its equivalent abroad. Many undergraduate programs require candidates to complete their 12th year of chemistry.
You do not need an ATAR of 100 to study medicine. Entry requirements for medical programs differ from one school to another and from one year to the next. Therefore, it is impossible to foresee a “minimum” requirement. Your ATAR is considered by the medical schools along with your UMAT and the scores of your interview to calculate your entry range.
You can maximize your income chances by getting a good ATAR, but also keep in mind that an ATAR of 100 does not mean you will win a seat automatically.
The Undergraduate Medical Examination Test (UMAT) must apply for undergraduate admission in 9 of the 21 accredited medical schools in Australia. Your critical thinking, problem-solving, personal comprehension and nonverbal abstract reasoning abilities will be evaluated. Also, skills considered important for the study and the subsequent practice of medicine. A good UMAT score, combined with good grades, college admission, and volunteer experience will be very useful for your application to the Faculty of Medicine.
You will need a UMAT qualification to apply for 2020 for undergraduate studies at one of the following Australian universities:
Graduate Entry Medical Programs
If you are applying for a four-year medical degree, you must have obtained a degree in some discipline. However, all medical programs have special access plans for students in special situations, such as those with extensive experience in health care and a strong motivation to become a doctor. You should check with each university for more details.
A degree in science is not a prerequisite for graduate programs; Academic excellence is fostered and recognized in the humanities and social sciences; However, knowledge and skills in physical and biological sciences will also be required to succeed in GAMSAT. Remember that some postgraduate programs require the completion of freshman subjects in anatomy, physiology and/or biochemistry.
You must take the Admission Test to the Australian School of Medicine (GAMSAT) and attend an interview as part of the selection process. GAMSAT will evaluate your ability to understand and analyze written material and presented graphically. It measures skills and knowledge over a long period of time and tests your ability to reason, make logical deductions and make judgments.

Medical Schools in Australia FAQ
How to Become a Doctor in Australia
However, if you from Australia and want to go to the medical school in Australia, your academic results and grades count a lot. The results of the NCEA will be converted into an ATAR score that can then be used to apply to Australian medical schools.
Fortunately, the results of your NCEA have a relatively favorable ATAR conversion. So your ATAR could be a bit higher than it would be if you really went to high school in Australia. In general, however, it will be very difficult to take more competitive medical courses once you fall below 97 ATAR mark.
The medical schools of Australia accept the IB and CIE grades. Obtaining a score in the ’40s in the IB or obtaining an AAAA in CIE gives you a good opportunity in the best and top medical schools. But as always, the higher your scores, the better.
However, if your high school grades are not excellent, you should start with an undergraduate degree and then apply to medical school as a postgraduate student. Also, you do not need to study anything related to medicine, so if you have always had a passion for English, get a degree in English! Then, if you get good grades and crush your GAMSAT, you will be much more likely to enter a top medical program than just applying with your low grades in high school.
The Cost of Medical School
Medical school is expensive. Period.
There is no way to avoid it. Whether you choose the first or third cycle, studying medicine will cost you a lot.
New Zealand Expenses and Financial Aid
In New Zealand, the average medical education for citizens, residents, and Australians are approximately NZD $15,249 per year. As an international student, your annual budget ranges from $32,376 to $78,907 NZD, depending on your course.
Of course, you should also consider your cost of living. Depending on the city where you go to school and your lifestyle, you will need $15,182 to NZ $25,969 per year, not including tuition. In total, he plans to earn around $30,431 – NZD 40,945 per year if he is a local student and approximately $47,558 – NZ $104,876 per year if studying abroad.
I know what you think … how are you going to pay for a medical school?
If you are a citizen of New Zealand, resident or Australian, you are in luck. Government student loans cover your tuition and living expenses. However, you will have to repay these loans once you earn more than NZD 19,136 (before taxes). You may also be entitled to a weekly allowance that you do not need to repay.
However, as an international student, you are not eligible for a student loan. Fortunately, there are several scholarships and you can work 20 hours a week with your student visa.
Australian Expenses and Financial Aid
The Australian units are a bit more complicated because each university has three different enrollment rates.
- Commonwealth Supported Place Award (CSP): eligible Australian citizens beginning in 2020
- Domestic price: All other Australian citizens.
- International Award: The rest of the world, including New Zealand.
The places that the Commonwealth supports are government grants that do not need to be reimbursed. Basically, the government pays a portion of your tuition and you are supposed to pay the rest through the “amount of your student contribution.” The amount you will need to contribute will depend on your course.
As a medical student, your student contribution is $10,596 per year. Nothing bad! If you are not eligible for a CSP, you will pay the national price that is closest to the international price. For example, studying medicine at Western Sydney University would cost $ 10,596 a year to a CSP, $42,320 a year for a national student and an international student to $60,760 a year.
Again, you should also consider your cost of living, which can vary a lot in Australia. You need between $9,372 and $48,436 AUD depending on your location and lifestyle. The moral of the story is that the medical school in Australia is as expensive or more expensive than the medical school in New Zealand.
Once your income exceeds $54,126 a year, you should start paying your loans. As an international student, your options are limited to a few competitive scholarships. We are sorry!

Either way, Grace is beginning her teaching journey studying a Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Humanities and Social Sciences)/Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University. Grace loves to learn new things, write short stories and opinion pieces, read, and play contemporary Australian compositions on the clarinet. When she is not learning – if that is possible – Grace loves to sit and watch the sun set.
