Methodology

As part of our quest to find schools that will offer students the greatest educational value, we were naturally curious to know which are the techiest of these high-tech schools. To find them, we consulted university websites, reviewed national surveys from college students about their schools, searched various databases on subjects like computer science, biometrics and social media, and looked over winners of prestigious national awards such as the Innovators Awards. While we realize the system is not perfect, we needed a useful way of helping readers compare features among these various high-tech universities. The point system we developed is explained below.

In 1891, Throop University was established in Pasadena, California. In 1920, Throop was renamed โ€œThe California Institute of Technologyโ€. The Carnegie Technical School was established in 1900. In 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. Over the last two decades, China has undergone the greatest industrial buildup of any nation in history. Not long ago, the country was largely rural and underdeveloped. Kyoto Universityโ€™s Faculty of Engineering was founded as the College of Science and Engineering in 1897. It was the first college within what was then called Kyoto Imperial College. When the university was reorganized in 1919, it split from the College of Science and became the Faculty of Engineering. The Chinese University of Hong Kong was founded in 1963 to meet Chinaโ€™s growing demand for higher education. To do this, it set out to combine the best of Chinese and western culture. CUHK still upholds this ideal today; it enrolls several thousand international students each year. The School of Engineering at Osaka University began as the Osaka Technical School in 1896. Throughout Osaka Universityโ€™s 120-year history, it has stayed on the cutting edge of technical and industrial development. Founded by local government and local industry, the School of Engineering has maintained its relationships into the 21st century. This has resulted in unorthodox departments as well as a progressive style informed by the changing needs of industry and technology. Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) began in 1986 with nine undergraduate programs and 240 students. Since its 1962 founding, Korea Universityโ€™s College of Engineering has graduated over 30,000 students, and it has alumni who work all over the world. The college established Korea TechnoComplex in 1996, which was the first large-scale research complex of its type in the country. NCTU is one of the leading public universities in the country and one of the best engineering schools in the world. There are multiple divisions within the university which cater specifically to engineering students. Established in 1907, Tohoku University can trace its history back to the 1736 founding of the Meirin-yokendo Medical School, and it is recognized as the third-oldest imperial university in Japan.
