how to become a forensic psychologist in australia

In Australia, becoming a forensic psychologist is a pretty complicated process. The first step is getting your Bachelor of Psychology with Honours. From there, you can choose several different study paths to become a registered psychologist, including a Masters Degree specialising in psychology, or a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Psychology.

The Bachelor of Psychology with Honours takes four years to complete and consists of two parts: the Preliminary Skills Course (PSC) and the Advanced Skills Course (ASC). The PSC covers subjects like research methods, statistics and learning theory, while the ASC covers subjects like abnormal psychology and advanced statistics.

Once you’ve completed your Bachelor degree, you’ll need to apply for registration as a psychologist. To do this, you’ll need to undertake supervised training for at least two years under the supervision of an approved supervisor who has been registered for at least 10 years. You will also have to complete at least 12 months of supervised practice before being eligible for registration as a psychologist in Australia.

While there’s no specific training for forensic psychologists in Australia, it’s generally accepted that any doctorate-level qualification is required before applying for registration as a forensic psychologist. This means that if you want to become a forensic psychologist after completing your bachelor degree, then you’ll also need to complete your masters degree before applying for registration as an accredited psychologist with the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
