The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 features 51 of the top higher education institutions to study veterinary science.

The QS University Rankings by Subject are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). Top universities for veterinary science in the US and Canada

17 top veterinary schools are found in the US subject rankings this year; all of which are in the worldwide top 50, and three can be found worldwide top ten for veterinary science. The  University of California, Davis (UCD) usurps the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in the UK to retake the top position this year, after losing it in 2019. Other notable universities outside of the top 10 include Ohio State University (13th) and University of Minnesota Twin Cities (14th).

Over in Canada, there are three veterinary science in this year’s ranking, including University of Guelph, rising two places this year to 5th place. Other veterinary science universities in the ranking are University of Calgary (up five places this year to 42nd) and Université de Montréal (up three places to joint 43rd).

Top universities for veterinary science in Europe

Europe is home to 22 of the top universities for veterinary science. Eight of these 22 are situated in the United Kingdom and three are featured in the world top 10. Outside of the top ten, there are several universities which perform well this year, including University of Bristol (rising four places this year to 15th) and the University of Glasgow (17th).

The NetherlandsGermany and Spain each have two entrants in this year’s veterinary school rankings, with the Netherlands’ Utrecht University in 4th place and Wageningen University in 19th.

SwitzerlandSwedenItalyIrelandFinlandDenmarkBelgium and Austria all have only a single veterinary school entering the rankings this year. Of these, Switzerland’s Vetsuisse Faculty Bern and Zurich comes out on top, rising an impressive 13 places this year to reach joint 8th. Denmark’s University of Copenhagan isn’t far behind in 10th place and Belgium’s University of Ghent comes in at 11th.

Top universities for veterinary science in Australia and New Zealand

Australia has four universities in the subject ranking for veterinary science this year. Australia’s University of Sydney is the top ranked veterinary science school, falling three places this year to 12th place. Other notable universities include the University of Melbourne (rising one place to 16th), The University of Queensland (UQ, rising five places to joint 28th) and the University of Adelaide (49th).

New Zealand only has one entry in this year’s ranking; Massey University in joint 28th place, which scores particularly highly in the research citations per paper indicator.

Top universities for veterinary science in Asia

Asia has two universities in the rankings this year: new entry, South Korea’s Seoul National University (SNU) in 41st place and Japan’s University of Tokyo in joint 43rd place.

Top universities for veterinary science in Latin America and Africa

Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is Latin America’s sole entry this year. New to the rankings this year, the university comes in in 48th place, earning its highest score in the employer reputation index.

South Africa is home to Africa’s single entrant this year; the University of Pretoria, which drops seven places to joint 50th this year, earning a particularly high score on the research citations per paper indicator.
