The Master’s programme in Data Science (taught completely in English) is intended to give interested students the opportunity to consolidate and deepen their knowledge in the field of statistics and information technology at a demanding level. The students are trained interdisciplinary: classical statistical methods, programming, database systems and methods of machine learning form the methodological framework. This is supplemented by practical courses, e.g. in the areas of statistical consulting and business analytics, research-related events such as a research colloquium and courses dealing with ethical, legal and social impacts.

The four-semester Master’s programme can only be taken up in the winter semester. It is divided into a socket phase and a profile phase. Due to the interdisciplinary orientation of the course of studies and the associated, differently acquired first university degrees of the students, the socket phase is composed of differently oriented introductory modules. Under certain conditions, credit points can be earned for internships. The students write their master thesis on a topic in the field of data science. Graduates are awarded the title of Master of Science (M.Sc.).
Structure of the socket phase
Due to the interdisciplinary orientation of the degree programme and the different competences of beginning students associated with it, the socket phase (variant 1 and variant 2) is made up of differently oriented introductory modules.ย Variant 1ย is aimed at students with a Bachelor’s degree in the field of economics and statistics or comparable courses of study.ย Variant 2ย is generally aimed at students with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or comparable courses of study.
Structure of the profile phase
In the profile phase, all students deal intensively with basic statistical and information technology methods and deepen their knowledge in specific areas, depending on their interests, in order to acquire a versatile spectrum of methods of statistical and information technology methods and on the other hand to adopt the special perspectives of the individual application areas.
Studies abroad can be easily integrated into the Master’s programme in the compulsory optional part II and/or III by prior arrangement (e.g. through a Learning Agreement).
The students write their master thesis on a topic in the field of data science.

Students are guided increasingly to work independently following scientific principles and methodologies. The program is explicitly designed to convey practical skills and abilities.A Double Degree Master Programme between the Master in Computer Science (University of Bologna) and the Master in Intelligent Systems (Bielefeld University) has been established. Up to five selected students will spend their third semester (and optionally also the fourth semester for the Masterโs thesis) in Bologna and if they successfully complete their studies they will obtain both the Laurea Magistrale in Informatica delivered by the University of Bologna and the Master of Science in Intelligent Systems.

The aim of the master degree program Intelligent Systems is to convey knowledge and skills that enable students to analyse, design and develop complex cognitive systems. Such cognitive systems are characterized by the fact that they can perceive their environment and react accordingly in an intelligent manner. Another significant feature of these intelligent systems is their ability to learn and to thereby adapt to complex and changing environments, requirements and users. Such systems are especially relevant in the areas of robotics, virtual agents, multimedia and web information systems. Students are guided increasingly to work independently following scientific principles and methodologies. The program is explicitly designed to convey practical skills and abilities.
Industry, service providers, and intelligent systems research create a large demand for computer science specialists with an interdisciplinary training as facilitated at Bielefeld University. Computer science specialists with a background in Intelligent Systems are needed urgently in all areas where robots, intelligent assistants, virtual agents (avatars) or intelligent information systems are being developed. Possible areas of employment are therefore e.g. in mechanical engineering, production, the motor car industry, the media as well as in the development of autonomous systems (robots, avatars, dialog systems, intelligent assistants), the computer game industry and scientific research. To allow an individual specialization of the study program students can choose appropriate modules from the subjects โBasic Additionโ, โAdvanced Intelligent Systemsโ and โInterdisciplinary and Cognition Basicsโ. During the second term the module โBasic Project Intelligent Systemsโ should be taken. Within this module two practical projects have to be conducted containing 5 CP respectively and should be carried out to a predominant extent independently by the student. At least one project is done in a team consisting of more than two students. In the project module of the third term students expand their practical skills necessary for the design of intelligent cognitive systems. They practice and develop the skills necessary for planning and carrying out projects on their own. The master thesis provides students with the opportunity to investigate a scientific problem and to develop an appropriate approach independently. They gain skills necessary for the planning, implementation and evaluation of experiments as well as documenting results in line with scientific practice.
This program has an English-speaking branch which guarantees that courses will be offered to students not speaking German. A list of english study modules can be found in Service. Commands in English are veryfied by a language test (TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum of 87 points or telc English with a minimum grade of B2). Previous Degree
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). A qualified degree comprises:
- At least 40 credit points in basic subjects of computer science (mathematics, algorithms and data structures, theoretical computer science, computer architecture, etc.), and
- At least 30 credit points in subjects that are relevant for intelligent systems, such as e.g. artificial intelligence, language processing, signal processing, pattern recognition, robotics, behavioral/developmental/cognitive psychology, neuro/behavioral biology, or neuroinformatics.
