Kenneth Lutchen, dean of ENG, says the ranking of his schoolโ€™s biomedical engineering program is gratifying, as it has โ€œsome of the most sensational and impactful faculty in the world in terms of scholarship, funding, PhD productivity, and national leadership. The nationโ€™s [biomedical engineering] program leaders clearly are aware.โ€

US Newsย says its rankings are based on โ€œexpert opinions about program excellenceโ€ and statistical measures of faculty, research, and student quality. Among the tools for gathering that data is a reputation survey sent to more than 22,000 academics and professionals in the various disciplines.ย U.S. News weighs factors such as reputation, research activity and student selectivity to rank the top graduate engineering schools.

London-based QS, which issues the rankings annually, compared 980 international colleges and universities, culled from 4,000 considered for possible inclusion on the list.

โ€œWe are incredibly proud of the strides Boston University continues to make among our peer institutions, as evidenced by this latest gain in the QS World University rankings,โ€ says Jean Morrison, University provost. โ€œFrom the productivity of our professors to our reputation both in academics and as an employer, BU this past year performed among the very top one percent of universities in the world. It is a notable distinction and a reflection of the hard work of our talented faculty and staff and their commitment to excellence.โ€

QS collects and publicizes information on global higher education. Its World University Rankings, first published in 2004, are based on institutionsโ€™ proportion of international faculty and staff (a proxy for how attractive to these groups a school is, according to QS), the student-to-faculty ratio, the average number of academic citations per faculty member, and the institutionโ€™s reputation among employers and academics globally, which QS measures in annual surveys.

Among those indicators, BU did best in its reputation with employers: it was 98th among all the universities in the QS rankings. Although the University fell in that category from last yearโ€™s ranking, and also in its academic reputation and faculty citations, it rose in student-faculty ratio and in its proportions of international faculty and students.

QS also publishes a separate evaluation of universities by various academic subjects. The latest such report gave BU a shout-out as โ€œamong the worldโ€™s elite institutionsโ€ in 36 subjects, notably in life sciences (41st out of 1,117 institutions ranked), arts and humanities (63rd), natural sciences (94th), social sciences and management (96th), and engineering and technology (166th).

Two BU schools and programs moved up in U.S. News & World Reportโ€™s just-released 2020 rankings of the countryโ€™s best graduate schools.

The School of Public Health jumped two notches from last year, to 8th out of 177 schools graded. And the College of Engineering, one of 198 engineering schools ranked, advanced from 12th to 9th place for biomedical engineering.

Sandro Galea, dean of SPH and Robert A. Knox Professor, says his schoolโ€™s improvement โ€œis to the credit of thousands of members of our school community, faculty, staff, students, alums, and friends of the school. It is a privilege to be part of a community that aims for excellence in its scholarship, teaching, and service.โ€
