Graduate Programs


Master of Education

Students entering the Master of Education degree have the following options:

  • Course work only route – Students complete 36 credit hours of course work in the course route.
  • Thesis route – Students complete 27 credit hours of course work and a 9 credit hour thesis in the thesis route.

Note: All students begin in the course route.  Once 15 credit hours (including the 2 core courses: 07.752 & 07.714) have been successfully completed, the student, in consultation with the department chair, may submit an application to move forward into the Thesis route for the Master of Education program, following the procedures outlined in the M.Ed. Thesis Protocol .


Master of Music

Brandon University School of Music offers the Master of Music degree with majors in Performance and Literature (Piano, Collaborative Piano, Strings, Clarinet, Conducting and Composition), and in Music Education (advanced study with practical emphasis in elementary music, choral music, or instrumental music).


Master of Psychiatric Nursing

The Master of Psychiatric Nursing program, a first of its kind in Canada, is designed for professionals who are seeking advanced practice roles in administration, clinical practice or education. Graduates will be prepared for leadership in psychiatric nursing and health care.


Graduate Diploma in Rural Development (GDRD)

The Graduate Diploma in Rural Development is designed to provide graduate level study to those who wish to extend their knowledge of theory and practice through course work but are not interested in the research training component of graduate study.

The Diploma program consists of 18 credit hours of course work. Any sequence of courses is allowable but the thesis and practicum options are not available.


Master of Rural Development

The MRD degree provides students with the following:

  • Knowledge of current development theory
  • The ability to apply knowledge to their selected area of interest
  • Skills in understanding and participating in rural governance
  • Technical skills in research design and reporting
  • Basic training in community relations, networking, group facilitation and development planning
  • An understanding of the formulation and role of policy in rural development
  • Knowledge of the structure and functioning of rural society

Master of Science (Environmental & Life Sciences)

The Master of Science (Environmental and Life Sciences) degree (MELS) is an interdisciplinary program that provides students with the following:

  • Technical skills in applied and theoretical research, project design and reporting;
  • The ability to integrate and apply knowledge and techniques across a suite of disciplines to selected areas of interest within the environmental and life sciences;
  • Courses integrating knowledge and techniques drawn from the traditional disciplines of biology, chemistry, environmental science, geography, and geology;
  • An interdisciplinary thesis that investigates the interactions within and among organisms and/or the environment at scales from the molecular to planet-wide;
  • Training in the application of life and environmental science technologies

Payment must be received at Brandon University by the posted deadline dates. Allow three to six business days for the payment to reach Financial & Registration Services by the payment deadline date. A $30.00 fee (subject to change) is charged for payments received after the due date.

  • Students who register on or after above dates must pay at time of registration.
  • Students have access to all their financial information using the online student information system. Students who do not have access to online student information system are still responsible for prompt payment of fees by applicable deadline. A paper copy of student’s financial statements will not be mailed out.
  • For information on the Brandon University Student Union Health & Dental Plan or the U-Pass, please contact the BUSU office at 204-727-9660 or visit their website.
  • Payment of fees in a timely manner is required to avoid cancellation of registration. If cancellation occurs, a reinstatement process may be available. A reinstatement fee will be charged.
  • Tuition refunds (if applicable) are calculated from the date that Financial & Registration Services is notified in writing. Courses with non-standard start and/or end dates will have the refund calculated based on the dates Financial & Registration Services is notified in writing.

Refund dates will differ from registration dates (see Refund Schedule above).
