Carolinas College of Health Science’s Radiation Therapy program is for students who want the opportunity to learn about radiation therapy in a classroom setting, as well as during clinical experiences. Associate in Radiology

The Radiologic Technology program is part science and part art. Using state-of-the-art equipment, students learn to safely utilize X-rays to perform diagnostic imaging procedures. The growth for this high-demand career is expected to increase 28% this year.

This five-semester program includes 72 credit hours. Students will have a variety of radiography courses such as Applied Radiography, Imaging and Radiation Physics. Loan Forgiveness

Atrium Health offers a loan agreement available to finance up to $10,000 for students enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program. This loan defers payment on principal and interest, and if the graduate becomes employed full-time by an eligible Atrium Health facility, a work forgiveness option is available. Questions? Application Requirements

  1. Application – Submit a complete application by the deadline.
  2. High School Transcripts – A minimum 2.5 weighted high school GPA is required.
  3. College Transcripts (if applicable) – A minimum 2.5 cumulative college GPA is required.
  4. SAT or ACT Test Scores – A minimum 900 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT is required. The college utilizes only the critical reading and math portions when calculating the SAT score.

Information on Accreditation

The Radiologic Technology program is accredited by the Joint Review Commission on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). The program received an 8-year accreditation during its last site visit in 2015. Graduates are awarded an associate of applied science degree and are eligible to take the National Registry Exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). What does a radiation therapist do?

A radiation therapist is part of the care team that treats patients with cancer and other diseases through the use of radiation treatments. They work with doctors who specialize in radiation therapy (radiation oncologists) and oncology nurses who specialize in caring for cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used to treat cancer by shrinking or removing cancer or tumors.

Scope of practice

Radiation therapists work with radiation oncologists, nurses, and medical physicists to treat cancer patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Typical tasks and duties include:

  • Carrying out the treatment prescribed by radiation oncologists
  • Administering radiation treatments to patients with cancer and other diseases
  • Determining the exact location of the area needing treatment
  • Using the radiation machine to treat the patient
  • Monitoring patients for unusual reactions
  • Maintaining machines to ensure safety

Work environment

Radiation therapists work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, universities, and outpatient centers. Most radiation therapists work full time, with daytime, weekday hours; however, radiation therapy emergencies can happen, and some therapists may need to be on call or work outside their normal schedule. They spend most of their work day on their feet, and need to be able to lift or turn patients.

Radiation therapists are detail oriented, enjoy working with people and technology, and are able to stand on their feet for long periods of time. The role can be physically and emotionally draining.

Typically, radiation therapists follow the below pathway to their career:

  • Completion of an associate or bachelor’s degree
  • Completion of a certification program that specailizes in radiation therapy 

Certification process

Certification and licensing requirements vary depending on the state, but many employers prefer certified radiation therapists. They must complete an accredited training program or work full-time for two years before they qualify to take the national certification exam from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Certification must be renewed annually.

Career opportunities and outlook

Radiation therapists can expect a median annual salary of $86,800.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of radiation therapists to grow faster than average. With a large aging population and advances in radiation treatments, demand will likely increase for radiation therapists.

With additional training and experience, a therapist can become a certified medical dosimetrist. A dosimetrist calculates the correct dose of radiation treating cancer patients. Other therapists advance to administrative positions or to management positions such as chief therapist or education director.

Those pursuing a career in radiation therapy should be aware of licensing procedures and key role requirements.

Specifically, in order to work as a radiation therapist in the United States, an individual must first have completed education in the field of radiation therapy or radiography at an accredited institution. This includes completion of the Radiation Therapy Didactic and Clinical Competency Requirements set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within an accredited program.

Many four-year universities and colleges offer degrees that fulfill these requirements in the course of study. For that reason, many choose to pursue inclusive bachelor’s degrees. However, a radiation therapist does not necessarily have to possess a bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy or radiography; instead, those pursuing a career in radiation therapy may obtain an associate’s degree from an accredited institution, which may, in fact, be a community or technical college. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) is currently the sole agency recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and the US Department of Education for the accreditation of radiation therapy programs.

Once an individual has obtained either an undergraduate degree in radiation therapy, he or she must then become certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), the national body tasked with licensing radiation therapists. In order to do so, the aspiring radiation therapist must apply for and take an examination that will test the candidate’s competency in the field. The cost of the exam is $200 for those taking it for the first time, and subsequent examinations cost $175. Reinstatement by examination costs $200 as well. For some students, an online reinstatement fee of $75 can be paid to recertify the ARRT credential.

Before signing up for the examination, however, the ARRT suggests that those interested in becoming radiation therapists familiarize themselves with ARRT’s Equation for Excellence, a three-factor test that individuals can use to determine their eligibility. The three portions of this equation are:

The ARRT goes on to elaborate on each piece of this three-part equation. In regards to education, as mentioned before, an aspiring radiation therapist must obtain a degree from an accredited institution and complete certain requirements involving clinical competency. These requirements often include a number of years of clinical experience. Furthermore, if a current radiation therapist wants to obtain a specialty certification in a certain field, such as mammography, bone densitometry, sonography, or one of the many other sub-sects of radiation therapy, he or she must complete an additional set of clinical experience requirements, as well.

In regards to the examination, as previously mentioned, aspiring therapists must submit an application to take the examination along with an application fee. In order to receive certification, individuals must pass all sections of the examination. The contents of these exams varies from state to state.

Finally, in order to obtain certification, ARRT requires that all radiation therapists uphold a standard of ethics. In general, prospective radiation therapists must commit to behaving in a professional manner and working towards the improvement of the health of their patients. In addition, radiation therapists must not be convicted of any crime or commit any other ethical violations while working in the field.

While an individual who meets these standards is not guaranteed a position as a radiation therapist, fulfilling these requirements is necessary in order to obtain certification.
