Cedar Crest Honors Distinguished Nursing Alumni

Cedar Crest College celebrated its nursing graduates during the 39th Annual Pinning Ceremony prior to Commencement on Saturday, May 13th in Lees Hall. During the ceremony, the Partners in Nursing (PIN) also recognized the accomplishments of four former students with the Distinguished Nursing Alumni Awards.

The Distinguished Nursing Alumni Awards celebrate the achievements of outstanding nursing professionals who demonstrate the ideals of Cedar Crest College, and have distinguished themselves as leaders in the community. The PIN committee accepts nominations throughout the year, then selects the winners.

2017 Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award winners:

  • Donna Sullivan Havens โ€˜81, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the Award for Transformational Leadership. Dr. Havens is a tenured professor at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has received multiple honors throughout her career, and in July 2017 she will be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Internationalโ€™s Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Havens is also a visiting professor at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery at Kingโ€™s College in London, and the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto in Canada.
  • Ramon โ€œErnieโ€ Deeb โ€˜85, CRNA, received the Award for Clinical Practice. Deeb has been a registered nurse for 32 years and a CRNA for 26. In addition to working full time for Lehigh Valley Anesthesia Services, he is also a site coordinator for the Frank J. Tornetta School of Anesthesia at Einstein Medical Center, and is a dedicated mentor and preceptor for students in Cedar Crestโ€™s nursing program. Over the past seven years, Deeb has personally raised more than $100,000 for charity, which he has donated in the names of others.
  • Andrew Martin โ€˜12, MSN, RN, received the Notable Graduate of the Last Decade Award. Martin is the Corporate Clinical Risk Manager at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network. He has held several leadership positions, including director of emergency services of an emergency department, director of operations of an aeromedical transport program, and director of a sexual assault forensic examiner program. Martin is also the recipient of the Lehigh Valley Health Networkโ€™s Nursing Research and Quality Award for the Promotion of New Knowledge, Innovation and Improvement, and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Boys and Girls Club of Allentown.
  • Lora Steffie โ€˜99, BSN, RN, IBCLC, received the Spirit of Compassion Award. Steffie is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Sheโ€™s currently the director of the Lehigh Valley Breastfeeding Center at Childrenโ€™s HealthCare, the areaโ€™s first nationally recognized breastfeeding center. Steffie also started the โ€œMilk and Coffee Support Group – a New Mom’s Groupโ€, which meets weekly. This June, she will receive her Masterโ€™s degree and will become a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.

In addition to the Distinguished Nursing Alumni Awards, 67 graduating nursing students also received pins during the Pinning Ceremony.

Partners in Nursing was established in 1995 by a group of alumnae, former and current faculty, Cedar Crest College staff and members of the Lehigh Valley nursing community to support nursing education at Cedar Crest College. Through the efforts of PIN, more than 51 full-time and part-time nursing students, both traditional and adult learners, have received scholarships in the last 21 years.
