The Internal Medicine residency program is a four-year program designed to prepare residents for careers in internal medicine. Residents learn how to take care of adults with a variety of chronic conditions, diagnose and manage acute illnesses, perform procedures and prescribe medications. The program is based at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, which has full-time faculty members who provide supervision, instruction and mentorship to residents. The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Hurley Medical Center provides residents with an exceptional opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to pursue a successful career in primary-care medicine or to continue their training in a range of medical subspecialties. • A new administrative structure divides certain duties among 3 associate program directors (APD): Aram Minasian MD, IM Clinical Competency Committee; Philip McDonald MD, administrative APD; Thair Dawood MD, diversity & inclusion and quality improvement.
• Wi-Fi has been enhanced in the Dr. R. Roderic Medical Education Center, which allows for greater internet access but also Wi-Fi phone functions.
• Telemedicine has been upgraded to include new equipment as well as the MEND telemedicine platform.
• An internal Hurley wellness website allows information and resources 24/7 from the Hurley Intranet.
• Expanded work areas and other resources: 2 hospital-based lactation rooms are open to residents; a third computer work room was opened up to IM residents on the 10th floor; an Abbott Education Center room was designated as a daily handover location; the residents’ lounge was reconfigured to utilize two rooms, with computer work stations spaced apart for pandemic safety, as well as space for a USB kiosk to save presentations on a thumb drive (e.g., to take to conferences); nap rooms are now centrally located in the East Tower.

FACILITIES & ACTIVITIES

Recent remodeling makes for a light and airy outpatient clinic and on-site outpatient pharmacy, conveniently located near to each other on the ground floor of the hospital. Residents have designated days to work in the continuity clinic regardless of the location of their inpatient rotation. It takes just a few minutes to walk from one location to another. Noon conferences take place in the new Abbott Education Center, which is also centrally located in the hospital.

Central Michigan University College of Medicine fourth-year students gathered at Dow Diamond in Midland, Mich., at noon on March 18, 2022, to open envelopes containing the names of the residency programs in which they will continue their physician training for the next three to seven years.

At that exact moment, thousands of medical students around the United States and the world were opening similar envelopes or emails. The annual event is known as Match Day – and it is one of the most significant milestones in the life of a medical student.

“Match Day confirmed that residency programs across the country know the CMU College of Medicine recruits and educates fabulous students,” said Tina Thompson, senior associate dean of academic affairs at the CMU College of Medicine. “They are an amazing group of individuals—bright and dedicated, socially responsive, and eager to positively impact their patients and the communities in which they serve. We are very proud!”

One hundred and five students from the College of Medicine participated in the match process this year. In fulfillment of the college’s mission to train culturally competent physicians to provide comprehensive health care and services to underserved populations in Michigan and beyond, 67 percent of CMU medical students matched to primary care residencies―internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, combined internal medicine and pediatrics, psychology, obstetrics and general surgery. CMU medical students also matched to programs including orthopedic surgery, pathology and diagnostic radiology.

Approximately half the class, 52 percent, will remain in Michigan. Four students matched with the CMU Medical Education Partners residency programs in Saginaw, and four students matched to CMU affiliated hospitals. Two students matched with the United States armed services.

The Wayne State University Internal Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to train physicians to become compassionate, outstanding internists skilled in the practice of Internal Medicine and committed to excellence and lifelong learning.

The resources available to our residents for training and education are outstanding. The Detroit Medical Center is one of the largest teaching complexes in the nation. Our residents rotate through a number of unique training sites to gain a broad exposure to clinical medicine.

There are subspecialty fellowship programs that are directed primarily through the department’s divisions with oversight from medical education.
