About the Department

Founded in 1964, the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is the oldest and one of the largest computing science departments in Canada. We have an international reputation for contributions in the many fields of computing, both in foundations and applications.

The Department currently consists of 51 faculty members, approximately 326 graduate students, 20 post-doctoral fellows and research associates, 1,352 undergraduate students and 12 administrative staff. Our research partners come from a wide variety of industries and other academic disciplines.

Before entering this engineering major students experience a well-rounded, strong, fundamental engineering education through our common core of first-year courses. 

You are guaranteed your choice of major when you successfully complete all 10 technical common-core courses in your first year.

Transfer applicants who do not have the 8 required courses as noted above will be considered for the Engineering common first year.

Applicants without Mathematics 31 or equivalent may be considered at a higher average. Mathematics 31 will be replaced with another approved course. Students who are admitted to the School under these conditions, will require enrolment in an alternative calculus stream.

Students are encouraged to take high school courses related to their intended major, some courses not required for admission may be prerequisites for first-year courses.

Equivalent International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP) courses or previously completed SAT2 subject tests are accepted.
