Music Scholarships

All prospective students (whether you’re planning to major in music or another academic area on campus) are encouraged to audition for a music scholarship at Coe! We offer a wide variety of scholarships, ranging up to full tuition, all of which are renewable each year, as long as the student remains in good academic standing at the college and continues to perform successfully in his or her assigned ensemble.

Scholarship Options

Visual & Performing Arts Scholarships (up to full-tuition): These scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors and transfer students who demonstrate superior talent and ability in music. These scholarships are open to all students, regardless of major, and are awarded on the basis of an audition and an interview with members of the faculty. They may be combined with other Coe-funded scholarships and financial aid. Go to www.coe.edu/vpa to reserve your audition spot. For your audition, please prepare 5-7 minutes of music, consisting of two contrasting pieces/excerpts, to sing/play. 

All-State Music Scholarship ($5,000 per year): Students who have made All-State during their high school career are automatically awarded $5,000 if accepted to Coe (February 1 admission deadline). No audition required! Students who are interested in majoring in music at Coe are also encouraged to sign up to audition for the Williston Jones Marshall Music Full-Tuition Scholarship. Schauwecker Scholarships ($4,000+): Schauwecker Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and transfer students who plan to study music in some capacity at Coe. This includes students pursuing a Music Minor, Bachelor of Arts in Music, and Bachelor of Music (composition, music education or performance). The Schauwecker Scholarship may be combined with other Coe-funded scholarships and financial aid. Go to www.coe.edu/vpa to reserve your audition spot. Basler Scholarships ($7,000+): The Basler Scholarship is open to prospective students planning to pursue a music major (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music) at Coe. In addition to a traditional scholarship, this financial package includes funding that can be used for the student’s additional education expenses (i.e. textbooks, sheet music, etc.). The Basler Scholarship may be combined with other Coe-funded scholarships and financial aid. Go to www.coe.edu/vpa to reserve your audition spot. Williston Jones Marshall Music Scholarship ($35,000 – Full-Tuition): The Marshall Music Scholarship is open to prospective students who have the motivation and background necessary to pursue the Bachelor of Music (composition, music education or performance) degree. The Marshall Scholarship exists under the umbrella of the college-wide Williston-Jones Full Tuition Scholarship Program and therefore includes additional requirements. Full-tuition Williston Jones awards are renewable for an additional three years at the rate of tuition of the studentโ€™s entering year, plus a yearly increase of $1,000. Students who receive a Williston Jones scholarship valued at $38,000 or more are not eligible for any other Coe-funded financial aid and the Williston Jones scholarship will replace any institutional scholarships or grants they may have been awarded. To receive the full scholarship amount, students must live on campus. Commuter students should contact the Office of Admission with any questions.

To apply for the Williston-Jones Marshall Music Scholarship:

  • Submit your application form by January 3, 2022 for competitions on January 22, 2022 and February 20, 2022
  • Submit your screening audition tape.
  • For the interview/audition, please prepare to:
    • Play 5-10 minutes worth of music, consisting of two contrasting solo pieces/excerpts (no repeats or da capos please).
    • Perform sight-singing and pitch-matching exercises (provided by the music faculty during the audition).
    • Complete a music theory placement test.
    • Interview briefly with a music faculty panel.

1. Berklee College of Music Presidential Scholarship

This is one of the few full ride music scholarships, from Berklee College. Successful applicants demonstrate both financial need and musical talent. On top of covering tuition, recipients of this scholarship receive free on-campus housing and a laptop.

Partnering with the BMI Foundation, John Lennonโ€™s partner Yoko Ono started this scholarship aimed at supporting composers and songwriters. College students submit an original song that is judged by music industry professionals. Three recipients receive scholarships totaling $20,000. Depending on where you go to school, this could potentially help cover a significant portion of the cost of college.

3. Top of the Rock Peggy Gram Scholarship

The Peggy Gram Scholarship from the Top of the Rock Chorus is one of the music ed scholarships available. Itโ€™s designed for women who are involved in Music Education or Vocal Performance Education. The scholarship is awarded in the spring to cover the following yearโ€™s tuition. Recipients can apply again for subsequent years.

4. Big Arts Classical Music Scholarship

BIG ARTS, a performance organization in Florida, offers scholarships to students interested in pursuing classic music. This includes the piano. Florida students can receive $15,000, $10,000 or $5,000.

8. Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Scholarship Program

Well known big band leader Glenn Miller remains relatively popular today. The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society offers scholarships to performers who qualify for the Glenn Miller Festival. Three prizes are awarded, ranging in amount from $1,000 to $3,000. You can then use this money to help pay for costs related to schooling.

9. VSA International Young Soloists Competition

The National Trumpet Competition Award is granted annually in recognition of outstanding trumpet performance. Awards can be as much as $30,000 to be put towards your music studies.

This award is open to all high school and college-age students who have been accepted into a degree or diploma program at an accredited university or conservatory.
