Decker offers the following two pre-licensure programs for undergraduate study:
If you are or will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination before your intended start date, you are not eligible for a pre-licensure program.
Traditional program
- The traditional program is for students who have not yet received an undergraduate degree or for students with a bachelor’s degree who would like to study at a regular (non-accelerated) pace.
- Students in the traditional nursing program receive this preparation in a four-year program firmly grounded in the liberal arts and sciences.
- Students can apply as an incoming first-year, sophomore or junior.
- The program requires 126 credit hours consisting of:
- 52 credits of nursing courses
- 74 credits of nursing prerequisites, general education courses and electives
- Note: Students may transfer in up to 78 credits of nursing prerequisites, general education courses and electives.
Baccalaureate accelerated track (BAT) program
- The BAT program is available to students who already hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to study at an accelerated pace.
- This unique and rigorous 12-month program allows students the opportunity to obtain a second bachelor’s degree.
- The program requires 126 credit hours:
- 52 credits of nursing courses
- 74 credits of previously completed prerequisites, General Education courses and electives

Decker directly admits an incoming first-year cohort each year. These students are considered nursing majors once they pay their enrollment deposit. It is not necessary for admitted first year students to re-apply to the nursing program following completion of nursing prerequisites.

Students who remain on track will begin nursing core courses in the fall semester of their junior year. Many of the required courses include clinical components, allowing students to care for a diverse population of patients in several settings. Hospitals, community health facilities and long-term care institutions in and around the Binghamton area are used for clinical experiences. Decker has hundreds of clinical partnerships, including UHS, Lourdes Ascension, SUNY Upstate Medical and Guthrie.

Application process
Current Binghamton University students may apply to the traditional nursing program using the Intra-University Transfer and Double-Degree application in BU Brain. Applications are reviewed for the fall semester only.
Applications are due by March 15. Late applications are not accepted. Personal statements and letters of recommendation are not required and will not be reviewed. Decisions are released by July 1.
Admission guidelines
Admission is competitive and is based primarily on academic performance. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale), and a minimum 3.0 average in the prerequisite requirements. Repeated courses are averaged together; they are not replaced with the highest grade for admission review. An applicant’s introductory biology course grade will be included only if it increases your prerequisite GPA.
Students applying for the sophomore class must have one of the following combinations of prerequisites completed by their intended start date*:
- Chemistry I, Chemistry II and Introductory Biology
- Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II and Microbiology
Students applying for the junior class must have all prerequisites completed by their intended start date*.
*Courses may be in progress when applying, but preference will be given to students who have completed all prerequisites at the time of application submission.

Prerequisite course completion is required prior to starting the core nursing courses. In the traditional four-year plan, nursing prerequisites typically take four semesters (first year and sophomore years) to complete.

Academic and Professional Requirements
To be eligible for the online RN-BS program, you must have the following:
- Associate degree in nursing OR a diploma in nursing
- Applicants with an associate degree must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Applicants with a diploma in nursing are required to earn 24 nursing credits by passing three Excelsior College examinations with scores of C- or better: adult nursing, psychiatric/mental health nursing, and maternal and child nursing
- A current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the state where you plan to complete the program’s clinical requirements (individuals licensed in California or planning to complete clinical course requirements in California are not eligible for this program)
- Completed required prerequisite coursework (each course must be taken for a minimum of 3 semester credits; minimum grade of C-)
