Columbia University’s Master of Science in Applied Analytics is designed to prepare students with the practical data and leadership skills to succeed. The program combines in-depth knowledge of data analytics with the leadership, management, and communication principles and tactics necessary to impact decision-making at all levels within organizations.

The Master of Science in Applied Analytics prepares students for a career in analytics by providing them with the opportunity to develop their analytical capabilities, gain an understanding of how data can be used to solve problems, and learn how to communicate effectively about the insights they generate. The program includes courses on applied statistics and machine learning as well as courses on strategy, leadership, management and communication.

The following fees, prescribed by statute for each Fall or Spring term, are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the Trustees. The fees shown are those in effect during the 2021โ€“2022 academic year.

University charges, such as tuition and fees, residence halls, and dining plans, are due and payable in full by the date announced before the beginning of each term. To check on an account balance, log in to Student Services Online (SSOL) or call 212-854-4400. A late payment penalty is assessed on payments received after the due date.

It is the policy of the University to withhold all University services, including registration, diplomas, and official transcripts, until all financial obligations have been met.

Tuition 2021โ€“2022

There is a flat tuition charge for all Columbia College students, including visitors, regardless of the number of credits a student is taking. Students who are enrolled for eight terms must pay the flat tuition, regardless of the number of credits they are taking. The charge for 2021โ€“2022 is $30,257 a term.

Postgraduate special students and degree candidates enrolled for a ninth term are billed according to the per-point system; the per-point cost is $2,022.

Document Fee

All first-time registrants at Columbia University are charged a one-time document fee of $105, which thereafter allows them to order transcripts and enrollment and degree certifications, and to receive the mailing of the original diploma at no additional charge. This fee appears on the first Student Account Statement of the Fall term.

International Services Charge

All students holding a non-resident visa are charged an international services charge of $120 each term, totaling $240 for academic year 2021-2022. This fee supports the University’s services to international students.

All full-time students, international students, and and part-time students who are on the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan are required to pay the Columbia Health and Related Services Fee. Half-time or part-time students pay a reduced fee and have access to some, but not all, of the services.  Half or part-time students may elect to upgrade to the full-time fee to have access to the full range of on-campus programs and services. Student Health Insurance Premiums

To ensure students have access to high-quality healthcare while at Columbia, University policy requires all full-time students and all international students to have health insurance coverage that meets University requirements, in addition to the on-campus programs and services provided by Columbia Health. International students

Navigating the U.S. healthcare system can be complex. To help ensure that international students have access to the highest quality of care on- and off-campus, Columbia University requires all international students to enroll in the Columbia Student Health Insurance Plan.  On a limited case-by-case basis, international students may qualify for an exception. 

Waivers and exceptions

Domestic students who have an alternate insurance plan that meets established criteria set by the University may submit a request for a waiver and on a limited, case-by-case  basis, some international students may submit a request for an exception. Visit the Columbia Health website for more information about waiver and exception criteria.

Waiver and exception requests are due at least two weeks before the enrollment deadline (September 30 for Fall enrollment; February 15 for new Spring enrollment; or June 15 for new Summer enrollment). All requests are considered, but approval is not guaranteed. Students who do not submit a request for a waiver or exception in a timely manner will be charged the insurance premium on their term bill and are responsible for these charges.

Students must confirm their enrollment on SSOL or submit a request for a waiver (domestic students) or exception (international students) on the Columbia Health Patient Portal every year. Students will receive reminders thorough their Columbia email.

Applied Analytics in the Organizational ContextONLINE & IN PERSON

Applied analytics is about the strategic use of data and analytics to inform decisions within an operating environment. The use of analytics is rapidly becoming ubiquitous across all organizational functions. This course helps students understand how data and analytics are used across different functions to inform decisions that impact the organization. As such, it is the introductory course to the professional practice of applied analytics and the first course in the leadership sequence.

The course focuses on data and analytics within operational functions of different kinds of organizations across a range of industry sectors, and the overall ecosystem within which they operate. Students will also learn about the broader contextโ€”economic, technological, social, and demographic, and how these trends are influencing the use of analytics. Students learn how data and analytics are used to understand how an organization is currently performing, and how data and analytics can be used to inform future actions to optimize the performance of an organization. The goal is to introduce students to the professional practice of applied analytics, focusing on how analytics can inform a wide range of operational decisions within an organization.

Applied Analytics Frameworks and Methods IONLINE & IN PERSON

The world is generating data at an ever faster pace, including through business transactions, online searches, social media activities, and a variety of sensors. The ready availability of this unprecedented amount of data creates opportunities to predict outcomes and explain phenomena across a wide range of domains from medicine to business to even space exploration. Supervised learning techniques are being extensively used to make useful predictions and generate insights to tackle problems. These predictive analysis techniques are the focus of this course.

As the starting point of the two-part Frameworks and Methods sequence, the course guides students through the data-wrangling process, starting with data exploration and other foundational approaches. The course then covers an array of supervised learning techniques including linear regression, decision trees, and support vector machines. Students also have the opportunity to challenge themselves in applying and combining the techniques they have learned through a predictive analytics competition.

Organizations need quantitative analysis to solve complex problems and make consequential choices. Research design provides both a coherent framework for collecting relevant evidence and strategies for evaluating that evidence. Knowledge of research design enables organizations to make adaptive and effective use of quantitative analysis in solving problems and making choices. This course serves as a foundational course in the Applied Analytics program.

In this course, you will approach problems as methodological thinkers: you will assess whether the organization is asking the right questions, choosing a relevant design, gathering appropriate and meaningful evidence, and using the appropriate statistical analysis to answer those questions.

To varying degrees and in different organizational contexts, we will work to answer some of the following key questions:

  • What are the key questions that strategic decision makers need to formulate and answer in order to inform their decisions?
  • What data are available (and unavailable) that might be used to inform the important strategic decisions?
  • What research questions are implied by the needs of strategic decision makers?
  • What data do we need to measure those variables? Are we currently collecting that data? Why or why not?
  • Which analytical methods might be helpful in answering the research question?
  • What might challenge the validity of results and how can research results be communicated in a way that mitigates the risks associated with these challenges?

Storytelling with DataONLINE & IN PERSON

Data does not have meaning without context and interpretation. Being able to effectively present data analytics in a compelling narrative to a particular audience will differentiate you from others in your field. This course takes students through the lifecycle of an analytical project from a communication perspective. Students develop written, verbal, and visual deliverables for three major audiences: data experts (e.g., head of analytics); consumer and presentation experts (e.g., chief marketing officer); and executive leadership (e.g., chief executive officer).

Students get ample practice in strategic interactions in relevant social and professional contexts (e.g., business meetings, team projects, and one-on-one interactions); active listening; strategic storytelling; and creating persuasive professional spoken and written messages, reports, and presentations. Throughout the course, students create and receive feedback on data storytelling while sharpening their ability to communicate complex analytics to technical and nontechnical audiences with clarity, precision, and influence.
