The Food Protection Course trains individuals in food protection practices to ensure the safety of the food served in New York City’s food establishments. The NYC Health Code requires that there be at least one supervisor certified in food protection on site any time a food service establishment and non-retail food processing establishment is operating. Completion of this course and passing of the final exam satisfies that requirement.

To receive a certification, you must first complete the free Online Food Protection Course, The online course is offered in English, Spanish and Chinese. The course is self-paced and consists of 15 lessons. You must complete each lesson and pass a quiz before moving on to the next lesson. The study guide and exam are offered in English and 36 other languages.

Final Exams

In-person final exams are not being offered at this time.

The final exam, which includes a Food Protection Course Review, is available virtually for those who have completed the online course. The exam will be given via the WebEx application. Please log in to your account to register. There is a $24 fee to take the final exam. When you pass the online final exam, you will be issued a temporary Food Protection Certificate.

Important: We do not offer Food Manager Training for food service professionals in New York City. If you work in New York City, please refer to this page, or contact the health department for more information.

FAQs

What training options are available?

The Department of Health offers two to complete the food protection course: classroom training or online training.

  • The Classroom training option is a 15-hour course beginning on Monday and ending on Friday with classes lasting 3 hours each day.
    To qualify for the Food Protection Certificate, you must pay the $114 fee, attend all 15 hours and pass the final exam given on the last day of the course.
    This is a multiple choice exam with 50 questions. The passing grade is 70%.

Does the Food Protection Manager need to be present at the food facility at all times?

A person holding the food protection certificate must be on the premises and must supervise all food preparation activities during all hours of operation.

Food Protection: Online Training

If you are a supervisor in a restaurant or non-retail food service establishment, you must receive a City certification in food protection practices.

To receive a certification, you must first complete the free Online Food Protection Course or pay to attend the course in person.

The online course is offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese. The course is self-paced and consists of 15 lessons. You must complete each lesson and pass a quiz before moving on to the next lesson.

Final Exams

While the online course is free, you must pay $24.60 (including fees) to take the final exam to receive your certification. Please contact NYC Health for the most current exam pricing. 

You will be prompted to schedule an exam appointment once you complete the course. You must pay with a credit card.

Food Protection: Classroom

The Food Protection Course trains individuals in food protection practices to ensure the safety of the food served in New York City’s food establishments. The NYC Health code requires that supervisors of food service establishments and non-retail food service establishments be certified in food protection. Completion of this course and passing of the final exam satisfies that requirement.

The Food Protection Course is available in person in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. This course is also available for free online.

Cost: $114 – Verify with NYC Health for current price 

Frequency and Duration: The course is 15 hours long and is given over five days and each daily session is 3 hours long. It will usually start on Monday and end on Friday.

When Monday is a City holiday, classes begin on Tuesday, end on Friday, and each daily session will be three hours and forty-five minutes long.

Languages available:

English – classes are held twice a day: 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 4 pm.
Chinese and Spanish – classes are offered twice a month from 5 pm to 8 pm.
Korean – one evening class is held each month.

Food Handler Training 

My Food Service License provides online food handler training. Food handler training is optional in most areas of Montana and this course provides excellent food worker training to teach the important principles of food safety to food handlers. 

Your local regulatory agency may have additional requirements. Please contact your local regulatory agency for more information. 

This training is a general food handler course. If your local health department requires a food handler card, you will need to take that course. Before purchasing this course, click here to see if another course is offered for your jurisdiction. 

This course takes approximately one hour to complete and, upon successful completion, provides a printable food handler certificate. This certificate is good for up to five years.
