Marine high-voltage safety training (USCG-STCW) 

This Marine High-Voltage (STCW) five-day course covers the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), National Electric Code (NEC), Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) standards for high-voltage (HV) switching, electrical isolations and flash protection boundaries (ARC Flash) per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E 2012.

The course offers a practical learning experience on fully functional high-voltage and low-voltage units. Electrical principles and stress utilization and distribution are also included in this course. Our power generation and distribution simulator directs technicians in the start-up and troubleshooting of offshore high-voltage power systems.

Delegates who successfully complete our high-voltage course will satisfy the following:

  • The Marine High-Voltage Power Systems requirements of 46 CFR 11.335(a)(4)(vi) for STCW endorsement as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)
  • The Marine High-Voltage Power Systems requirements of 46 CFR 12.611(a)(4)(ii) for STCW endorsements as an Electro-Technical Rating (ETR)
  • Specific TASKs found in the National Assessment Guidelines of the Electro-Technical Officer NVIC 23-14. 8.A; 4.1.A; 4.1.B; AND 4.1.C

The Marine High-Voltage Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) United States Coast Guard (USCG) training course uses both theoretical and practical assessments to validate a candidate’s core competency to work safely in a hazardous high-voltage area.

High-voltage safety and switching (IADC)

This International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) high-voltage four-day course is designed to educate electrical personnel in the safe working practices for offshore and onshore industrial high-voltage applications. We provide IEC and NEC standards for HV switching. Our power generation and distribution simulator directs technicians in the start-up and troubleshooting of offshore high-voltage power systems.

  • Arc Flash Protection Boundaries and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • High-voltage terminology, system component identification and functions
  • Core electrical principles and concepts
  • Power system distribution and dynamics (PF, KVAR, KW, KWA)
  • Managing a high-voltage installation
  • Distribution component-switchgear and transformers
  • High-voltage cabling and electrical stress relief
  • Hi-Pot (high potential HV) and insulation resistance testing testing
  • Switching plans

ARC flash (NFPA 70E)

This one-day arc flash course provides delegates with the safe working knowledge and skills for both offshore and onshore industrial/commercial high-voltage and low-voltage applications.

Arc flash training focuses on recognizing the hazards and risks associated with working in a high-voltage hazardous area. Upon course completion, delegates will be able to understand the relevant standards and safety laws pertaining to arc flash.

  • NFPA-70E 2017, IEEE, OSHA 1910.269, OSHA 1910. 333, ANSI and ASTM
  • Arc flash protection boundaries
  • Incident energies
  • Appropriate PPE selection including American National Standards Institute (ANSI), U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and ASTM
  • Arc flash analysis warning labels
  • Inspection and storage of all PPE full electrical safety glove inspection
  • High-voltage and low-voltage switch room inspection
  • Recommended practices for isolations
  • High-voltage and low-voltage test for dead procedure
  • Switching and grounding
