If you are providing guidance to clients on income tax matters, Canada’s tax and legal systems have touch points you need to keep in mind.

This course provides an overview of both systems. The tax portion of the course explains the objectives and the structure of the Canadian tax system, outlining sources of income, allowable deductions and the general scheme for determining income for tax purposes.

The law portion of the course will bring you up to speed on the tools and concepts lawyers use in commercial transactions. After an introduction to how Canada’s commercial legal system works, the course takes a deeper dive into the topic of contract law and looks at special forms of contracts.

Please note that this online course is module-based. There are no check-in times or a set schedule. You are required to read through each module, and complete an assessment.

CPA PEP is a graduate-level program for CPA candidates that focuses primarily on enhancing the ability to apply professional knowledge, values, ethics and attitudes in a professional context.

CPA PEP consists of six modules that continuously build knowledge and skill:

  • two common core modules that all CPA candidates must take
    • focus: the development of competencies in management and financial accounting in six core technical competency areas:
      • financial reporting
      • strategy and governance
      • management accounting
      • audit and assurance
      • finance
      • taxation
  • two electives that allow you to focus on two areas of career interest
    • choose from four different electives:
      • assurance (mandatory for CPA candidates pursuing careers in public accounting)
      • performance management
      • tax (mandatory for CPA candidates pursuing careers in public accounting)
      • finance
  • one capstone integrative module*
    • focus:
      • developing enabling competencies such as leadership and professional skills
      • integrating core competencies
  • one capstone exam preparation module*
    • focus: preparation for the Common Final Examination (CFE) that all CPA candidates must take

The modules also include some knowledge acquisition beyond the academic prerequisite level.

Each module ends in an examination. CPA candidates must pass each module examination to proceed to the next module.

This program takes two years to complete on a part-time basis as you work at relevant employment. Its structure and content are developed nationally, based on the CPA Competency Map, and are delivered provincially/regionally.

The admission requirements are an undergraduate or master’s degree and specific subject area coverage.

*Capstone courses are culminating courses. In them, you demonstrate what you have learned over the course of the program.

LANGUAGE BENCHMARKING

The CPA PEP is a graduate-level academic program requiring a high level of English language proficiency. Success depends on the student’s ability to understand and articulate ideas orally and in written form with detailed descriptions, opinions and explanations. It is strongly recommended that students have achieved a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark of at least Level 8 in reading, writing, comprehension and listening at the time of enrolment, and at least Level 10 upon completion of the program.
