Last Updated on December 21, 2022 by

Many pre-nursing college students are aware that a B.S./M.A. or B.S./M.S. degree is necessary in order to become an RN. Unfortunately, not every student is able to afford the additional year(s) of study. The Excelsior Paramedic to Registered Nurse Bridge Program was developed to provide a seamless transition between the two degrees by allowing a qualified applicant to take nursing classes while pursuing his or her Bachelor’s degree in another field, reducing education costs and time to completion.

Are you in dire need of relevant information on excelsior paramedic to rn cost, paramedic RN bridge program online, Excelsior nursing program, what states accept Excelsior nursing degree, amongst others, and don’t know how to go about obtaining it? It is important that all students are aware of the unique features of this online nursing program. Distance education is as challenging as face-to-face instruction, if not more so. The nursing component of the associate degree program requires outstanding critical thinking skills and nursing judgment, along with a commitment to academic rigor.

We are currently accepting applications to our Associate Degree in Nursing program from a limited number of states.

We are accepting applications to our Associate Degree in Nursing program for applicants from the following states:

  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

We have verified with each named state’s board of nursing that graduates of Excelsior College Associate Degree in Nursing program will be able to apply for licensure in that state. We are currently not accepting applications from other states, until further notice.

Curriculum Update: Associate degree in nursing students admitted on or after January 1, 2021, will enroll in a curriculum that offers nursing theory concurrent with clinical instruction. Online courses in nursing theory, NUR 250 in Phase II and NUR 290 in Phase III of the program, will include weekly synchronous laboratory experiences and one in-person clinical experience within the 8-week term. Please note that both NUR 250 and NUR 290 require travel to meet course requirements. In addition, students are required to purchase a skills kit (available in the bookstore) for two courses, NUR 104 and NUR 105, in Phase I. Students will use items in the kit to complete nursing skills assignments that will be evaluated by the course instructor.

  • The Associate Degree in Nursing program is designed for LPNs, LVNs, paramedics, and certain classifications of active duty military, National Guard, or Reserves within specific military occupations with equivalent scope of practice to LPN/LVN or paramedic.
  • A student’s possession of an LPN, LVN, Paramedic, or Military Corpsmen credential does not guarantee success in the Associate Degree in Nursing program.
  • The Associate Degree in Nursing program is designed for individuals with experience in clinical settings. Students will have opportunities to expand upon existing clinical skills and knowledge throughout the curriculum and will demonstrate their clinical competence during the nursing capstone.
  • Students are required to submit a Verification of Health Care Experience Form signed by a clinical supervisor at the time of admission and again prior to course approval for Competencies for Contemporary Nursing Practice.
  • Students enrolled in the Associate Degree in Nursing program are assigned a primary academic advisor, but may also work with different members of the academic advisement team during their enrollment.
  • Repeating any Excelsior College sources of credit will require students to pay the tuition and/or fees that are associated with that requirement. Students will be responsible for paying the Student Services Annual Fee for each year they continue in the Associate Degree in Nursing program.
  • A student’s success or failure in completing program requirements (including all Excelsior College sources of credit) will affect their progress through the Associate Degree in Nursing program. The time limit for completion of the associate degree is seven years.
  • Pass rates for the National Council Licensure Examination-RN (NCLEX-RN) are updated and available on the Excelsior College website.
  • Because each institution of higher education maintains its own credit transfer policy, credits earned in Excelsior’s Associate Degree in Nursing program may or may not be transferable to other institutions.
  • The Associate Degree in Nursing program is and will remain accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) through May 10, 2021. Excelsior College will voluntarily withdraw associate degree nursing program accreditation on May 11, 2021. Please note that the Associate Degree in Nursing program remains approved and accredited by the New York State Board of Regents. Additionally, Excelsior College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Withdrawal of ACEN accreditation may impact RN licensure eligibility in certain states, and some employers and higher education institutions may require graduation from a nursing program with specialty accreditation, such as ACEN accreditation, as a condition of employment or admission into a nursing program.
  • Students are responsible for reading and understanding the RN licensure requirements in the state they hope to practice in following graduation or if considering relocation. Students may consult with the State Board team and the State Board Requirements web page for current information regarding eligibility for RN licensure in each state and U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Students are encouraged to read the School of Nursing catalog  prior to enrolling in a program of study.

The Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS, measures basic essential skills in reading, mathematics, science, English, and language usage. The test is designed specifically to assess a student’s preparedness for entering the health science fields and is an entrance requirement for many U.S. nursing degree programs. Studies show a consistent link between a student’s performance on the TEAS and future academic success. Before you apply to Excelsior’s associate degree in nursing program, you must complete the TEAS with the minimum scores outlined below within one year prior to the date of your application.

The TEAS is an important first step on the path to your nursing degree, but don’t let it intimidate you. Over 85% of students achieve the score requirements on their first attempt, and Excelsior is here to support you every step of the way with resources designed to help you succeed.

The Texas Board of Nursing accepts candidates from programs in other states for a license in Texas as long as their curriculum requirements are substantially equivalent to the requirements for Texas-approved programs. Since Excelsior’s program does not require faculty supervised clinical instruction, it is not equivalent. However, state legislation allows Excelsior graduates to take the NCLEX for licensure in Texas as long as Excelsior holds national nursing accreditation (ACEN) and is approved by the NY Board. Excelsior will voluntarily withdraw ACEN accreditation for the pre-licensure associate degree program on May 10, 2021.

At that time, the pathway to a Texas license will be different. Excelsior graduates who are eligible may take the NCLEX for a provisional license. They will hold that provisional license until they complete 500 hours of supervised practice and then will be issued a full license.

Licensing Rule 217.2(a)(4)(E) states:

“(E) If an applicant for licensure as a registered nurse has completed a clinical competency assessment program which is deemed not to be substantially equivalent to Board standards for Texas programs, the Board may issue a provisional license to the applicant once the applicant has passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN® Examination). The applicant will be eligible for full licensure if the applicant completes the requirements of clause (i) or (ii) below:

(i) The applicant completes 500 hours of clinical practice under the direct supervision of an approved preceptor. The applicant, prior to beginning practice, must submit the name and license number of a potential preceptor for Board approval. After completion of 500 hours of clinical practice under direct supervision of the approved preceptor and the preceptor’s signature that the applicant is competent and safe to practice nursing, the applicant may be eligible for full licensure.

(ii) The applicant completes an educational program at an approved Texas program which is designed to assess and improve clinical skills for applicants who have not completed supervised clinical experiences in their prior educational program. The applicant must seek and receive the Board’s approval prior to entering into the program to ensure that the program will allow the applicant may be eligible for full licensure. The applicant must provide the Board evidence of completion of the approved program.”

The Texas legislature HB 2950 provides a pathway for licensure for Excelsior graduates.

The Bill directing the Board of Nursing (BON) to license graduates of the Excelsior nursing program (HB 2950) was passed by the Senate and the House and signed by the Governor. The bill directed the BON to establish a process for licensure. The BON conducted public meetings to meet this requirement, and proposed rules on which Excelsior was able to provide feedback. Dean Pollard represented the School of Nursing at these meetings.

According to law, NCLEX-RN pass rates must remain above the Texas BON benchmark of 80 percent. Should they remain below 80 percent for four consecutive years, students will be required to complete additional requirements for licensure. Currently, no additional requirements are necessary for Excelsior students to be licensed in Texas.
