Florida State University College Of Medicine Bridge To Clinical Medicine Program
Students admitted to the Bridge to Clinical Medicine major will be enrolled in two courses with medical students in the medical degree curriculum. In the summer semester, Bridge students will take Medicine 1 which includes Clinical Anatomy-Embryology-Imaging, physical examination, and Values and Virtues of Medicine and Medicine 2, foundations of molecules and mechanisms, in the fall term. Non-medical school courses include a two semester clinical ethics course using small group, problem-based learning and focusing on developing an understanding of ethical concepts and issues as found in clinical cases. Fall semester requirements include the common core course in Statistics and a Healthcare Seminar designed to integrate medical, basic science, and biopsychosocial topics. The Bridge to Clinical Medicine curriculum concludes in the Spring Semester when students participate in a Community Service Preceptorship and will be enrolled in the Multicultural Healthcare course or the Community-based Health Research course. Students will participate in a clinical and research experience by developing an IRB-approved health-related research prospectus and by conducting site-based field work research. The students will conduct this community-based research for a minimum of 6 weeks with a medically underserved population under the supervision of faculty. The student will write a detailed research report and oral presentation of this experience and their findings to be evaluated by a team of College of Medicine faculty.

Bridge Program
The Bridge to Clinical Medicine major of the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, better known as the Bridge Program, is designed to expand the pool of successful medical school applicants from medically underrepresented, rural and inner-city communities.
Students will be selected for the Bridge Program from the regular Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) admissions cycle (application cannot be made directly to the Bridge Program). Students from medically underrepresented, rural and inner-city populations who do not gain direct admission to the medical school may be invited to participate.
This three-semester experience will allow selected students to demonstrate growth and improvement in both academic and health-care settings. Candidates selected for this program will embody the characteristics of the physician-healer and have a high likelihood of practicing primary care medicine with under-served or minority populations in rural or inner-city locations. Students who complete all requirements for the Master of Science with a grade of B or better and otherwise fulfill the program requirements will be admitted to the FSU COM.
Honors Medical Scholars Program
The FSU COM has joined forces with the Honors Program to create a professional-track program available, on a highly competitive basis, to a small number of motivated first-year students in each incoming Honors class. The program gives students a head start on their chosen careers by allowing them to become members of the COM community while they are still undergraduates.
Through the Honors Medical Scholars Program, and upon completion of premed requirements, students will be eligible for Early Decision admission to the FSU COM, making it possible in some cases to receive an undergraduate degree and an MD degree in seven years.
Honors Medical Scholars benefit from participation in a special seminar course, a mentorship program, premed prerequisite courses, medical and community volunteer activities, and the Honors Medical Scholars society and other student organizations. Honors Medical Scholars are given pre-professional advising, meet with professors, observe classes, and shadow current students.

Overview
The Bridge to Clinical Medicine major of the M.S. Program in Biomedical Sciences is designed to expand the pool of successful medical school applicants from medically underserved, rural, and inner-city communities. It is a 12-month program that provides both education in medical knowledge and experiences in clinical practice. The Bridge to Clinical Medicine M.S. major provides disadvantaged students with a bridge to medical school or a career in healthcare.
While preparing students for the rigors of medical school the Bridge to Clinical Medicine also provides training appropriate for a graduate degree and a career in healthcare-related biomedical sciences for those students who elect not to continue toward a medical degree.

The University of South Florida’s one-year Masters of Science in Medical Sciences program provides a high-quality “pre-professional” program that will significantly enhance and extend the academic development of future healthcare professionals and contribute to a diverse student body. This innovative, interdisciplinary program, the first in Florida to provide an integrated approach to the subject areas that comprise the “basic” biomedical sciences, is designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation prior to continuing in a variety of healthcare-related professional programs. The pre-professional program was founded on the premise that future clinicians, researchers, educators and healthcare professionals in the biomedical sciences will require extensive interdisciplinary training in order to develop novel solutions to current health care problems.
Prospective Applicant Profile
The ideal applicant to the MSMS pre-professional program:
- Is interested in improving their academic credentials before applying to a health professional school (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, etc).
- Wants to academically prepare themselves before entering a health professional school.
- May have missed the deadline to apply to a health professional school.
- Wishes to experience an interdisciplinary biomedical sciences curriculum.
Curriculum
The interdisciplinary curriculum has been designed to provide the background training that will equip students with the essential tools for a successful career in the biomedical sciences.
This program is designed to be completed with full time enrollment in one year (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Courses are held on-ground. The full curriculum can be found in the Graduate Catalog.
