Registered Nursing Associate Degree Program (ADN)

Fresno City College has the largest community college Associate Degree Nursing Program in California and the second largest program in the USA. Complete each step below in order to apply to the Registered Nursing Program.

Step 1: Apply to Fresno City College
Complete online Fresno City College application.

All applicants to the Nursing programs must apply for admission to Fresno City College to obtain a SCCCD Student ID number prior to applying to the Registered Nursing programs. When applying you will be asked to declare a major, please select Pre-Allied Health. Once accepted into the program your major will be changed to Registered Nursing.

Step 2: Complete Registered Nursing Application Requirements
Pass ATI TEAS with 62% or higher
No more than 2 attempts
90 days required between attempts
If ATI TEAS not taken at the FCC Assessment Center,
Transfer ATI TEAS Individual Performance Profile to FCC through www.ATItesting.com “Transcripts”
GPA of 2.5 or above

A cumulative GPA calculation will be done using all college coursework documented on all college/university transcripts
Application requirements include the completion of all eight (8) prerequisite requirements and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above

Applicants with courses from outside SCCCD
Applicants who would like to use pre-requisite or general education courses completed from outside of SCCCD should meet with a Fresno City College Counselor. The counselor will assist in determining whether the Course Substitution Petition process needs to be completed. This process should be completed before applying to the Registered Nursing Programs or any Allied Health Program. Students with courses from a California public community college or university may use the follow links to determine equivalency of courses from outside institutions with Fresno City College:

If a Course Substitution Petition is needed, courses must be evaluated by each department for possible approval. The required documents to initiate the review of a course are a copy of the official transcript and the course syllabus. This is a lengthy process and must be done at least 2-3 months prior to submitting an application. All approved FCC course substitutions must be submitted with application.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
Appropriate credit for AP scores recognized by Fresno City College may be applied to meet an application requirement. Please submit with your RN program application an unofficial copy of the AP College Board scores for any course you would like considered to meet program course requirements. Students must submit an official copy of their AP College Board scores to Fresno City College in order to receive college credit.

Applicants using Foreign Education courses
Students who have completed courses outside of the United States must have foreign transcripts evaluated by an evaluation service approved by Fresno City College. Please meet with a Fresno City College Counselor/Allied Health and Nursing Counselor.

Step 3: Complete the Nursing Program Application

The program application is accessible only during the Application Period:

Traditional RN – January 7-February 4, 2022 (until 4 p.m.)
LVN-RN Articulation – October 4-November 2, 2021 (until 4 p.m.)

All Applicants and reapplicants must complete the online Registered Nursing Program Application and submit confirmation email along with all required supporting documentation (see step 4).

Reapplicants will not be required to submit previously submitted college/university transcripts or ATI TEAS results.
Reapplicants will be required to submit ALL updated supporting documents including but not limited to, results from ATI TEAS retakes not previously submitted and transcripts from outside institutions showing courses completed between application periods (see step 4).

For an overview and assistance with completing the online Program Application, workshops are available via Zoom during the application period. These sessions will not provide a review of your application for completeness. Please read all information on Step 3 to review your application for completeness.

Step 4: Turn in Supporting Documentation
SUBMISSION OF SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS IS A TWO (2) PART PROCESS:

1. College/University Transcripts

Submit college/university transcripts to the Transcripts Department at Fresno City College on or before the posted application deadline. Applicants must submit ONE (1) official College/University transcript from each school attended OUTSIDE of State Center Community College District (Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, Madera Community College).

Transcripts may be sent in one of two ways:

Step 5: Monitor Application Status

Log back into your Online Program Application by selecting applicable “Continue Application” option to view your lottery status.
All Students are Pending before lottery results are posted.
After the lottery has been conducted, if your status states “Selected”or “Alternate”, you must accept or decline your placement within a week of the date results are posted.
Check “Important Dates to Follow” for response deadlines.
Check SCCCD Student Email for any information from the Registered Nursing Program.

Selection Process

The Traditional Registered Nursing program begins in the Fall & Spring semester each year.

The LVN-RN Articulation Program begins in the Summer Session each year.  

FCC utilizes a Multiple Criteria Selection (MCS) process for admission into the Registered Nursing Programs. The MCS process is a point based system. The points earned from the criteria determine a student’s eligibility to participate in the lottery selection process.

Students will be required to reapply each year. The number of times a student has participated in the lottery will not be counted.

This process is student driven, which means applicants are responsible for supplying all transcripts and supplemental documentation required, as well as keeping the Registered Nursing Department informed of any changes in applicant name, address, and/or phone number. To be eligible for the Registered Nursing programs the online Program Application must be completed and all transcripts and supplemental documents submitted to the Registered Nursing Department.

In 2021, over 1,100 students applied to the Fresno City College Registered Nursing program. Fresno City College’s internal lottery process had some changes based on the volume of applications to our Registered Nursing Program. Our internal changes in no way impacted the chances for any student to be selected for the program. A preliminary lottery is held based on the information that students provide on their applications. Students are determined to be “eligible” for the lottery based on self-reported GPA, grades, scores, and other information. Our staff then verifies that those selected meet the program application requirements. An applicant status will be “pending” until the verification process is complete. Results posted will indicate if an applicant is “selected”, “alternate”, or “unselected.” Please note – our lottery is a strictly random process from all eligible applicants regardless of the number of times students apply. 

We encourage all unselected students to meet with a counselor to discuss options for achieving academic goals.

Associate in Science Degree in Nursing

The profession of registered nursing involves the provision of health care services, both direct and indirect, that focus on the maintenance, promotion and restoration of health. This includes basic health care to help people cope with difficulties in daily living that are associated with actual or potential problems of health, illness or the treatment thereof. Nursing is a dynamic problem-solving profession that focuses on the response of the individual to health problems. The practice of registered nursing requires a substantial amount of scientific knowledge and technical skills as well as leadership and managerial abilities. Students attend classes on the Fresno City College campus. Nursing experience is provided in selected local hospitals and health agencies.

Admission requirements

Enrollment in the Registered Nursing Program is limited. Minimum qualifications for selection must be met. There are no restrictions as to age, race, sex or marital status. Prior to the final date for filing an application to the program, the applicant must have:

1. Graduated from high school with a minimum grade point average of “C+” (2.5) or better in high school work or completed the General Educational Development (GED) test with an average standard score of 45.
2. Completed Chemistry 3A or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better. 3.
3. Completed Biology 20, Human Anatomy, and Biology 22, Human Physiology, (or Biology 21A and 21B, Human Anatomy and Physiology) with a grade of “C” or better in each course.
4. Completed Biology 31, Microbiology, with a grade of “C” or better.
5. Completed Sociology 1A, Introduction to Sociology, or Anthropology 2, Cultural Anthropology, and Psychology 2, General Psychology, with grades of “C” or better in each course.
6. Completed English 1A, Reading and Composition, with a grade of “C” or better.
7. Completed Mathematics 103, Intermediate Algebra, or a more advanced math course with a grade of “C” or better.
8. Attained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of “C+” (2.5) or better in completed college work.
