Hotelschool The Hague has been implementing a thorough selection procedure successfully since its founding years, resulting in an average of 1 in 4 students who gets accepted. During the selection day candidates are tested on their social skills, leadership potential, motivation and affinity with the hospitality industry. As a result of this extensive selection, Hotelschool The Hague has an extremely low drop out rate of 7%. The careful selection of students is essential to our relationship with the hospitality industry. This constant interaction requires qualitative service -oriented managers; ambitious and ready to conquer the world. Our successful alumni all over the world prove time and time again that the precise selection of the right candidates has a lucrative long term benefit. We could not wish for better ambassadors.

Recently a team has been formed consisting of lecturers and researchers of the research group ‘Hospitality, Personality and Behavior’ as an initiative to improve the selection process. We want to prevent failure of students, but also attract the best students possible for our programmes. By constantly improving we can guarantee a successful career for our graduates and also meet the needs of industry.

The principle of the new selection process can be described briefly as a comprehensive assessment center, similar as with recruitment for companies. We find out whether the candidate is a good fit, but the candidate also finds out if the school is a good fit for him or her. A selection day is very beneficial for the candidates, after all for most of them it is the first time they experience such an assessment.

Below you can find the steps that Hotelschool The Hague has taken in defining the new selection process and the measurability of abstract values ​​that are normally determined by sense and intuition.

Step 1: Profile – Determine the characteristics of the appropriate students for the education
What defines a good or even the best student? How do you recognise talent? On the basis of an extensive student profile, you can determine different criteria for selection. Hotelschool The Hague developed five student profiles with associated personality traits and aspirations after graduation. Using these profiles, we can ensure that our students can best prepare for a career within the hospitality industry or outside the industry, so that they can have a seamless transition into the labor market after their studies.

The representative ‘Hotel School student’ is social, devoted, ambitious, professional and knows how to get things done. The five profiles have additionally been identified by Hotelschool The Hague; the ‘Hospitality Leader’, the ‘Hospitality Enthusiast’, the ‘Specialist’, the ‘Consultant’ and ‘Entrepreneur’. Students within these profiles are all seeking the necessary knowledge for their field, gaining management skills, personal development and a relevant network.

In addition, the ‘Hospitality Leader’ has ambitions for a role in General Management at one of the major international hotel chains. The ‘Hospitality Enthusiast’ seeks a management role in, for example F&B or Operations within the hospitality industry. The Specialist has ambitions to work in a management role in a specific discipline such as Marketing, Human Resources or Finance and will likely take an additional Master’s study to complete their Bachelor’s degree. The Consultant is looking for a job in consultancy and the Entrepreneur has ambition to start their own business as quickly as possible, often during the study.

Step 2: Selection criteria – Translate the student profile to selection criteria
The translation of the intended characteristics of a student to clearly defined and measurable criteria should be carefully examined. At Hotelschool The Hague we look for leadership skills, personal skills, passion for the hospitality industry, cognitive skills, study skills and motivation for the Bachelor’s programme.

Candidates must possess a certain level of English and basic numerical skills. If they score below the minimum level, they are immediately rejected regardless of any other results and scores. Candidates who score above the threshold are then judged on a pitch, several interviews and a group assignment.

One of the criteria candidates are selected for are leadership qualities. We define this quality as the ability to lead and inspire people as well as employees. This quality is measured by looking at the following skills: high self-discipline, structure in dealing with tasks, prepared to work and focus on completing tasks. During the interview, candidates are asked about past experiences. The candidate scores high on leadership if he or she can prove to have successfully completed projects in the past, within a deadline, with realistic planning and with an effective use of resources and fellow students, friends or colleagues.

Step 3: Execution– Determine the way of selecting
The new selection procedure at Hotelschool The Hague consists of a pre-selection consisting of a home test and an 8 hour selection day. During this day the candidates will:

– Follow a 40 minute Master class on a fascinating topic related to hospitality;
– Give an elevator pitch;
– Hold a structured interview of 30 minutes with a trained interviewer and a student;
– Do a group assignment during around one hour, with eight participants based on the contents of the master class followed in the morning, where the candidate is asked to directly use the gained knowledge;
– An English test, a basic numerical skills test and a motivation test.

A selection team is composed of 40 employees and 45 representatives from the industry. It is important that all candidates, both during selection in the Netherlands and abroad, are assessed and selected in the same way. All selectors have therefore been trained beforehand in order to standardise the interviews and the evaluation of the group assignment. Our students also participate in the process, for example they are involved as second interviewers during interviews, observer during the group assignment and as guides for the groups of candidates.

Step 4: Assessment – Assessing the results
After the selection day, all candidates will be informed within three days. Internally, the selection data is linked to the results of the accepted students after the start of the study, to be able to monitor the validity of the selection process and to be able to make improvements in the selection procedure.

The procedure means an intense experience for the candidates. Where else would they be giving, for example, an elevator pitch at that age? This way we not only assess the candidates, they also learn more about us as a hospitality management school and most importantly they gain insight into themselves and their capabilities. Just like an assessment in business, a selection day provides a valuable learning experience.

So far, 600 candidates took part in the new way if selecting and the initial results are very positive. The extra cost of this method of selecting outweigh the cost savings that a lower drop out rate of students entails. But most importantly we have noticed that the candidates at the end of the day, after this intensive, eight-hour experience, are even more convinced of their choice to want to study at Hotelschool The Hague, than before they walked into the building to begin their selection day.
