Admission Requirements

Years of College: All matriculating students must have successfully completed at least 90 semester hours/140 quarter hours. It is highly recommended that all matriculating students will have received a bachelor’s degree from an accredited, four-year college or university prior to matriculation to the Meharry School of Dentistry. Online and introductory courses will not be accepted towards required prerequisites.

Pre-Medical Course Work: Course Work with an average of ‘C’ or better is required in each of the following:

Dental Admissions Test:
 Every applicant must take the Dental Admission Test (DAT). For more information about the DAT, visit the American Dental Association’s web site here.

Completion of an application through the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS).

Supplemental Application: The supplemental application for the 2022 admission cycle will be available August 1st. Once all required application materials have been received and the verification process has been completed by AADSAS, applicants will be emailed a link to the supplemental application. Upon completion, a processing fee of $65.00 will be assessed and must be paid electronically through the application website. Please do not send a separate payment to Meharry. This supplemental application allows the applicant to further describe his/her activities.

Letter of Recommendation: Three (3) letters of recommendation, are due directly to AADSAS by December 15th. The address to which the letters should be mailed will appear on the AADSAS Letter Request Form. Those applicants who attend, or who have recently graduated from, an undergraduate institution or a post-baccalaureate pre-dental program which offers a Health Professions Advisor or Advisory Committee should submit a letter from this person or committee; this letter should be sent to AADSAS as described above. If no such institutional letter is available, the applicant should substitute a minimum of three (3) individual letters, including two from Science professors. These letters should be sent to AADSAS as described above.

English Language Proficiency

  • Must be proficient in the English language
  • All applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a total score of 95 or more to be considered for admission. (No waiver will be given)
  • Must submit TOEFL scores via the American Dental Education Association: Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists (ADEA CAAPID); only computer based TOEFL scores are accepted (NO paper based)

National Board Examination Requirements

  • To be considered for admission, applicant must pass National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II prior to the application deadline (A minimum score of 75 or Pass result) (Passage must be within the last 5 years) or pass the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE)
  • Submit official scores via ADEA CAAPID

Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) Requirements

  • Completion of the ADAT is accepted, but NOT REQUIRED for admission to the program

Letters of Evaluation

  • Program requires three (3) Letters of Evaluation (in English) via ADEA CAAPID
  • Program requires one Letter of Evaluation from a former teacher who worked with the applicant in a clinical or educational setting who can attest to the applicant’s character, conduct and professional ability
  • Program prefers one Letter of Evaluation to come from the dean of the dental school from which the applicant graduated
  • All submitted evaluations MUST be submitted on appropriate letterhead and signed to be considered

Transcripts and Evaluations

  • Applicant must submit to ADEA CAAPID an official, detailed, course-by-course evaluation by Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES)

Application Fee

  • After receipt of your verified ADEA CAAPID applications, instructions will be sent via email for a school specific Supplemental Application
  • Pay a $175.00 non-refundable Supplemental Application fee to Meharry Medical College, through the link provided only.

Additional Documents

  • Provide a scanned version of your Dental Curriculum Vitae (a resume that includes your educational credentials and dental experience starting after your initial dental degree) to the program (Not to ADEA CAAPID)
  • One 2” x 2” passport photograph to the program (Not to ADEA CAAPID). Print your name and ADEA CAAPID number of the back of the photo.
  • A copy of the applicant’s dental certificate/diploma. (This school-issued document will confirm your conferred dental degree). If the dental certificate/diploma is not in English, provide the dental certificate/diploma along with the English translation administered by a bona fide English translator.
  • A copy of the applicant’s US dental license (if applicable)
  • Proof of residency (a copy of immigration documentation, US passport or permanent resident card or VISA)

Additional Requirements

  • Once completed applications are reviewed, selected applicants will be invited for a personal interview and assessment exam
  • A non-refundable fee of $250 will be assessed for the technical examination

Entering students will be required to complete a criminal background check

Scholarships and Grants

There are a few scholarships and grants available to students at the Meharry Medical College. Several students are awarded the Honors Incentive Scholarship who have performed exceptionally well in their undergrad. It covers their total tuition and fee for the first year. However, funding is not automatically available for the next years and is based on academic performance. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program pays for students’ tuition and fees and other expenses including textbooks, clinical supplies and instruments, laboratory expenses, uniforms and travel expenses for one clinical rotation. The Tennessee Black Conditional Grant Program (TCG) is available to African American residents of Tennessee applying to the Meharry Medical College. The State of Tennessee also supports Tennessee residents accepted at the Meharry Medical College through a grant offered by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The = grant is approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC). Funding is contingent upon availability of funds from the State and the student maintaining excellent academic performance. 

Federal Loans

Students unable to afford the program have two options available under federal direct loans program which are Med Direct Unsubsidized loan and a Direct Grad PLUS loan. To qualify for the Med Direct Unsubsidized loan, students need to fulfill two requirements: the first is Entrance Loan Counselling and the second one is a Master Promissory Note.

Selection Factors

The Admissions Committee selects students based on a comprehensive review of their cognitive abilities, personal traits, and characteristics of the candidates. Some of the other most important selection factors also include academic performance, MCAT scores, letters of recommendation, research experiences, research statement or medical school personal statement and secondary essay, as well as the extracurricular activities. Applicants must also complete the CASPer test, one of the components of the Altus Suite. CASPer is a pre-requisite to the Meharry interview. If you have not completed it, you won’t be interviewed. Don’t forget to practice with CASPer questions and realistic simulations before you take the actual test.
