karlsruhe institute of technology admission requirements for international students

The university welcomes students from all over the world for its programs. International students however may have a few different requirements for admissions as compared to domestic or EU students. The admission requirements are listed below.

Basic Admission Requirements:

  • Entrance Qualification & all previous transcripts as all universities are interested to know about the applicant’s previous educational background to evaluate that applicant can stand at the required level to attend the chosen course or not.
  • Transcript of Grades as anyone can get a degree but there are grades which separates them. Some courses required minimum marks in a particular subject in order to offer admission.
  • Proof of German Language Proficiency as most of the undergraduate courses in Germany are taught in the German language or typical English language proficiency for courses offered in dual language.
  • Additional Standardized Tests like GRE/GMAT may be required, depending on the course
  • ID & Valid Passport Copies
  • Letter of Motivation (optional)
  • Some graduate courses require previous work experience, Resume, CV, etc. so kindly check particular requirements

Application process

Attention: Application will only be valid once all the documents have been stamped and signed by the applicant’s current (home) university and have arrived by ordinary mail at the International Students Office at KIT.

  • After nomination of applicant’s home university, applicant will receive an email containing information on KIT online application system Mobility Online.
  • After submitting the required data, applicants have to print off the completed application form.
  • At the same time, the applicant must start preparing their Learning Agreement and check it with the respective home university coordinator.
  • In addition to that, applicants must obtain a German language certificate stating their German level at their home university or a recognized language institute or school.
  • A simple certificate of attendance is not sufficient. If a candidate has any plans to attend English-taught lectures then they should also obtain an English language certificate.
  • After all that, applicants have to take printout of both the application and their Learning Agreement signed and stamped by the ERASMUS coordinator of their home university.
  • And finally, applicants have to send the signed application forms as well as the signed Learning Agreement, the German language Certificate and/or English language Certificate by post to the mentioned address: KIT – International Students Office ERASMUS INCOMING Coordinator Adenauerring 2 76131 Karlsruhe Germany
  • All the admission seekers must make note that all the above mentioned documents have to be sent in hard copies and arrive by June 1st (winter term or whole year) or December 1st (summer term).
  • When the institute receives the applicant’s paper application documents, the institute will contact the applicant by email and inform them about possible missing documents (just in case).
  • Once application documents are complete, admission office coordinators will evaluate candidate applications.
  • As soon as the applicant’s have been accepted by the departmental coordinators, they will receive a letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) by email along with further information (ex- “Preparation”). This will happen mid-July for admission for the winter semester or at the end of January for the summer semester.

German Language Proficiency Requirements

The institute requires German language proficiency for all it’s applicants (especially foreign nationals). Those planning to apply to German language taught programs would require to appear for German language proficiency tests. All applicants require a B1 German language proficiency at the time of application. However, on enrollment, applicants can provide any of the following test scores:

  • DSH2 (onlyDSH Exams accredited by HRK are recognized)
  • Test DaF 4444 (minimum 4×4)
  • DSD 2 of German schools abroad
  • German Language Test as part of Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test at preparatory college)
  • Goethe Certificate C2
  • Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule

English Language Proficiency Scores

Applicants who do not have English as their primary language may need to provide proof of their English language proficiency like TOEFL, IELTS etc. in case they are enrolling for English language programs at KIT. These requirements may differ from course to course. Refer the program of your interest for specific requirements. Following are the test scores required:

Visa Process for International Students

International students who do not have German citizenship or are not permanent residents need to apply for a German student visa in order to study at the university. Students are advised to apply well in advance in order to have enough time to apply for a visa. The documents required are listed below.

  • Travel health insurance
  • Get in touch with your local German embassy for further information.

Students need to apply for a study residence permit in order to enter the country and study at KIT.

Requirements for ERASMUS (transfer within EUROPE) students

  1. Partner University: Applicants must be enrolled at a partner university (means another KIT institution across Europe or works together with KIT) of KIT at the time of application.
  2. Nomination: Candidate must have applied successfully at their home university (currently studying) for an exchange position at KIT, which simply means, candidate have to be nominated for exchange position at KIT.
  3. German skills are compulsory: Applicants must show the valid skills of German language at the time of application (June 1st or December 1st), as most of the lectures across KIT are only available in the German language. Applicants for chemical and mechanical engineering, chemistry, architecture, informatics, and biology must have at least B1 level according to the European Language Level Framework and all other courses applicants must show proof of minimum score of A2 level in the German language.
  4. English skills (applicable for English courses): If you are planning on attending English taught lectures or write your final thesis at KIT in English, you should provide proof of good English knowledge, i.e. B1-level.

Students with special needs

KIT welcomes students with disabilities and requires them to contact the International Students Office as soon as possible, so that special care can be taken during preparation.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany: Undergraduate Admissions

There are several programs available to students to choose from at KIT. These programs include Mechanical Engineering (only bachelor’s program offered in English), applied earth sciences, chemistry, chemical engineering, architecture, etc.
