Enrollment in the international Master’s degree programme Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EE&IT) is possible for both the Winter Semester and the Summer Semester.

Please notice that for the new application period for winter semester 2021/22 intake, your English knowledge must be mandatory proven by a GRE test only! https://www.ets.org/gre. Our Institutional Code, therefore, is 7144. The minimum required score in the section Verbal Reasoning is 145. TOEFL, IELTS or similar test results are only optional but not admissible and cannot replace GRE test results. ETSยฎ offers for a majority of countries home testing while some test centres are closed due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.   • The following documents are necessary for your application. Please check the following list to ensure that you have all the necessary documents available. All documents in a language other than English and German must be translated into English or German:
  • Degree certificate of a completed Bachelor’s degree programme and university transcript including a list of subjects and grades. Please submit the information about your Bachelor’s degree, which forms the basis for your application for the Master’s programme at Kiel University. If the degree certificate of your Bachelor’s degree is not yet available, a provisional university transcript is sufficient. Your degree certificate must be submitted at the latest for enrollment.
  • The module handbook belonging to your Bachelor’s degree programme or a comparable document indicating the duration, teaching forms, teaching content and learning objectives of the individual modules. If your university does not provide a module handbook, you can compile this information yourself. In this case, however, it must be clearly recognizable that your document is not an official document, but a self-created one.
  • Certificates for practical work experience in the field of engineering, e.g. due to internships outside the university or due to a job in industry.
  • Proof of English knowledge by the mandatory result of an GRE test. TOEFL/IELTS or similar test results are only optional but not admissible and cannot replace GRE test results.
  • Applications from China, Vietnam or Mongolia will only be accepted if the certificate from the Academic Examination Board is enclosed

Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

Classical electrical engineering was restricted to the area of electromagnetic phenomena and laws and their technical use, such as in telecommunications and high-frequency technology or in electrical power technology. Due to recent developments, especially in the area of computer technology, it has long since become a general systems technology, with applications in nearly all technical areas. When supplemented with mathematical and system-theoretical concepts, it forms a powerful basis for the interdisciplinary collaboration of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology with many other technical disciplines (for example, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Medical Technology, and Nanotechnology).

The scientific education of an engineer at a university is characterized by a significant emphasis on theoretical basics and scientific methodology. Education should ensure that the student receives both general technical competence and methodological competence that makes them capable of analyzing the tasks assigned to them in their later activities, solving them independently and with initiative, and even working out new discoveries and methods to extend the level of knowledge in their subject.

Electrical engineering, electronics and information technology have penetrated nearly every part of our lives. Engineers in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, therefore, have a wider variety of employment opportunities in many different industries:

  • Classical work areas are the electrical industry, information and communications technology, and power systems.
  • In many industries, electrical engineering and information technology are considered a key technology: machine design, automation technology, aerospace, the automobile industry, process technology, medical technology, environmental protection systems, and so on.
  • In the area of research and development, electrical engineers work at universities and at other public and private research institutions.


The numerous special fields of electrical engineering can be broken down into four main groups:

  • Information Technology: Telecommunications; wired and wireless data transmission; audio and video technology; mobile radio; navigation; radar technology; traffic control systems; computer technology
  • Microelectronics and micro- and nanosystems technology: Development, manufacturing, assembly, testing and quality control (for example of integrated circuits or sensors); software development for computer-supported development of systems, circuits and components
  • Metrology, control and automation systems: Automation and production processes, mathematical modelling of technical processes; robotics; safety systems and engine management in automobiles; telematics
  • Electrical power technology: Generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and its use
