Laval is a French-language medical school in Quebec, Canada. It was founded in 1854 and is one of the oldest medical schools in North America.

Qualifying courses

Once your application package has been assessed, you will be informed of whether you must take qualifying courses. These courses are personalized, related to your field of study, and allow you to:

• Take the prerequisite courses for your program
• Develop appropriate language skills for university studies by taking French courses at your proficiency level, if necessary
• Acquire the level of knowledge necessary to succeed at university
• Learn the tools and work methods necessary for university

Non-francophone applicants

The Laval Medical School requires a minimum of six years of study in pre-med, as well as a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the final year of high school and during the first three years of undergraduate studies. The program also requires an English proficiency test score of 6.0 on the IELTS exam or 85% on the TOEFL exam.

Laval students must complete an interview process before acceptance into their program. This includes: a personal interview, two written tests, and one group task.

Because most courses offered at Université Laval are in French, you must have an adequate knowledge of the language to attend UL. After applying, non-francophone applicants must take the Test de connaissance du français (TCF) to assess their French proficiency level.

Based on your TCF results, you may be required to take French immersion courses in addition to your qualifying courses. If your results are below the minimum required, you will have to improve your French before beginning your qualifying courses. Université Laval offers a variety of French-language services for students.*“Non francophone” refers to someone who completed elementary and high school in a language other than French.

Other French tests

Although the TCF is the main proficiency test, DELF, TFI, and TEF test results from within the past two years may be accepted, provided they include a written expression component.

Results from the TCF, or another language test, must be sent to UL before your arrival by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Undergraduate programs

Canadian applicants from outside Québec

Undergraduate programs

• If you obtained your secondary school diploma in a province other than Québec and you have a total of 12 years of education, you can apply for admission to Université Laval in a non-limited enrolment bachelor’s program. You will be required to complete a qualifying year on campus. The year counts for 30 credits with the possibility of taking six credits in your chosen university program, spread out over two semesters.

Master’s programs

To be admitted as a mature student you must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent resident over 21 and fulfill the following conditions:
