The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz was established in 1948 and is considered as one of the oldest and most prestigious film schools in the world. Each year the Lodz Film School is ranked amongst the top best schools according to โThe Hollywood Reporterโ.
Its mission is to educate directors and cinematographers of both live-action and animated films, lighting designers, still photographers, editors, screenwriters, producers and actors. Students achieve practical and theoretical knowledge, and shoot their own projects on film or digital under artistic guidance of acclaimed Polish and international filmmakers.

At the Lodz Film School we put great emphasis on the practical aspect of film education and provide professional assistance of professors when you work on your film projects. We are convinced that until you get onto a real film set that you should learn the profession, gain experience and independence. We will provide you with the latest generation sound and lighting equipment including digital cameras.
Daily classes are held at our film and television studio facilities as well as at postproduction and special effects computer classrooms. Full- time film school employed camera operators and sound recordists, with all their wealth of knowledge and experience, will help you make your first films. What differentiates the Film School from others is the possibility of working with established professional 35mm film stock. We provide cameras, editing tables, and a sufficient amount of practice to realize every ambitious idea and develop your talent. The School Film Production Unit organizes and carries out the production of over 300 film projects a year. With its help the following student films are made: fiction and documentary films of film directing students, directors of photography films, animation films and television dramas. Films made during workshops or regular classes are recorded on all kinds of media; traditional optical film stock as well as analogue and digital video. All areas of film production work in units: camera equipment, sound, editing, scenery, props and set design are all involved in the making of every film from the shooting stage to the production of the final print. We are trying to keep up-to-date with each technical innovation as it appears in the world of contemporary film technology.
Each year, new equipment is purchased and the film and television studios are equipped so that the School can give a taste of professional production, so that students, the future filmmakers, feel at home in this environment. In order to be enrolled each applicant has to pass the entrance exam.
There are two types of exam: the first one more complex and taking place in June each year is meant for Polish applicants, EU citizens who speak Polish, all other countries citizens also holding Polish citizenship and speaking Polish. The exam is conducted in Polish. Those who pass the exam can study for free.
The second type of the entrance exam is less complex, takes place in September and is meant for international students not holding Polish citizenship. This exam can be taken in English, if the foreign student does not know Polish, or prefers to take it in English. Taking and passing this exam qualifies the applicant for paid type of studies in a given specialization.
In exceptional cases if the applicant does not speak English or Polish the school may provide an interpreter from a different language if the school gets notified in advance and if it is possible to arrange.
- The tuition at the school is entirely run in the Polish language.
- Foreign students who do not know Polish having passed the entrance exam, initially join a year long Polish language course at the school and just attend the language classes. The course price is 2,000 Euro.
The following year they can join a group of newly admitted Polish students and start their film studies.
