Our History
- 1894: One of our founding organisations, St Brides Foundation Institute, is established to provide specialist printing education. Over time, it merges with a number of other schools and colleges to develop its scope across graphic arts.
- 1954: Artist and designer Tom Eckersley establishes our undergraduate course in graphic design โ the very first in Britain. Today, his work can be found in UALโs Archives and Special Collections Centre, which also holds the Stanley Kubrick Archive.
- 1962: We move to our home in Elephant and Castle, and become known as London College of Printing. Over the years, we begin to develop our teaching across areas including photography, film and public relations.
- 2004: To reflect the growing diversity of our courses, we become London College of Communication.
- 2017: We launch Screen School, which brings together traditional areas including film, television and animation with emerging disciplines such as games design and virtual reality.

The University of the Arts London is Europeโs largest higher education institute dedicated to the study of fashion, art, design and the performing arts.
UAL actually comprises six separate colleges, the most famous of which is arguably St Martins, which has produced some of the art and fashion worldโs most recognised names, including Stella McCartney, Louise Wilson, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

University of the Arts London (UAL) has further established itself as the global leader of undergraduate creative education, according to world rankings released this week.
For the second year running, UAL has ranked 2nd for Art and Design in the QS University World Rankings by Subject 2020, next to fellow London institution the Royal College of Art, which is dedicated to postgraduate Art and Design studies.
London universities claim 3 of the top 20 spots – with Goldsmiths, University of London in 14th – reiterating the UK capital as the world-leading city for studying Art and Design.
The rankings, compiled by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provide authoritative comparative analysis on the performance of 13,138 individual university programmes, taken by students at 1,368 universities in 83 locations across the world, across 48 academic disciplines and 5 broad faculty areas.
