The Vocational Nursing Program prepares students for entry-level vocational nursing licensure and competent practice. After completion, students will be able to synthesize theories and principles necessary for licensure as a vocational nurse and develop critical thinking skills in preparation for their first job in vocational nursing.

Students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university should refer to the ASSIST web site at www.assist.org and

Program Admissions Requirements

CNA Certificate: a current, valid State of California Nurse Assistant Certificate (C.N.A). Completion of VN 215 plus state
competency examination and certificate fulfills this requirement.
Reading Proficiency: Meet the current college graduation reading proficiency requirements. In order to do so, please
contact the Liberal Arts counseling department at (562) 938-4049, or the Pacific Coast campus counseling department
at (562) 938-3920 to schedule the LBCC Assessment test(s) and for a group meeting with a counselor. Completion of
Read 82 or 83 with a “C” or higher or the Assessment test indicating Reading Met, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher
from an accredited college (Equivalency must be approved by the LBCC English Department). *Starting Fall 2014
Application Period –Completion of English 105 is required.
Math Proficiency: Qualify for Math 110 through the LBCC Assessment tests; or complete Math 815 or higher with a
grade of “C” or better. If math classes were taken at another college, meet with a counselor to initiate an evaluation of
the course for equivalency.
Writing Proficiency: Met for graduation: Qualification for English 1 or completion of English 105.
High School: Proof of high school graduation (12 years) is required. Official transcripts from a USA high school, or
official General Educational Development (GED) certificate, All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by ACEI
translation service.
Life Science: BIOLOGY 60 Completed within five (5) years of the application deadline. ANATOMY 1 (Human Anatomy)
and PHYSIOLOGY 1 (Human Physiology) will be accepted. Life Science Department Chair must approve any
equivalency.
Grade Point Average: If previous college work has been completed, a GPA of 2.0 in pre-requisite courses must be
achieved.
Information Meeting: Applicants should attend an information meeting prior to submitting an application.
Meetings are posted on the VN webpage and in the Nursing and Allied Health building.
Prerequisite Courses: All prerequisite courses must be completed prior to entering the program. Application dates are
posted on the VN website and in the Nursing and Allied Health office. Prerequisites must be completed within the
previous five years.
Background Check: Vocational nursing students must obtain a clear criminal background check prior to the first day of
clinical experience. Vocational nursing graduates send fingerprints with the application for licensure.
A social security card is required by the California Board of Nursing in order to take the NCLEX. In addition, a social
security card is required by some clinical agencies. Inability to provide proof of social security card may jeopardize a
student from completing clinical requirements.
Program Information
Applications, along with all required documents, must be submitted during the Application period, to the office staff of the
School of Health and Science. Selection for admission to the next beginning class will be by lottery. If more students apply
than can be accepted, selection will be based upon the student’s science GPA.
We offer a full-time 2 ½ semester (or 45 weeks) program.The program admits students twice a year, the second eight
weeks of Fall and Spring semester.
While waiting for the program to start, the student should take any of the following courses to strengthen reading, language
or mathematics skills. To prepare for a nursing career: AH 60 (Medical Terminology), BIO 60 Lab (Human Biology Lab),
CDECE 47 (Human Development), COUNS 1 (Orientation for College Success), LEARN 11 (Learning and Academic

Minimum Unit Requirements: §Any course that appears on a curriculum guide and the General Education Pattern (Plan
A) may fulfill both major and general education requirements (Approved by College Curriculum Committee Spring 2012).
For this degree, complete a minimum of 60 units in courses numbered 1-599. Please note that additional elective units
may be required to meet this minimum based upon courses selected to fulfill General Education for the Associate
Degree.

Scholarship: Maintain an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (“C” average) based on all accredited college work
applied to the degree, no matter where completed. For this field of concentration, complete each course above with a
grade of “C” or better, or “P” if course is graded on a P/NP basis.
Residence for the Degree: Complete at least 12 semester units of the required 60 semester units in residence at Long
Beach City College in order for the college to grant an Associate of Arts and/or an Associate of Science Degree.
Field of Concentration: 12 units in this field of concentration, including Roles and Responsibilities, must be completed
in residence. This is an exception to the college’s residency policy due to this program’s governance by the State Board
of Vocational Nursing. Under this Board’s policy directive (Title 16, Section 2535) it is bound to only require this minimum
residency requirement.

INFORMATION REGARDING NURSE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATION
Completion of the prerequisite courses of VN 215 qualifies the successful student to apply to the State of California Department
of Health Services Aide and Technician Unit for permission to take the required written and performance test for Certified Nurse
Assistant. Teachers of the VN 215 course will assist students with the application process. No application fees are charged by
the Aide and Technician Unit, but the applicant will have to pay a fee of $55.00 for a Livescan check. A fee of $90.00 is charged
by the agencies that provide the written and performance testing.
Students planning to enter the vocational nursing program must obtain the Certified Nurse Assistant status. Upon graduation
from the vocational nursing program, licensing is delayed at least 3-6 months or longer, and most graduates need to find
employment as Certified Nursing Assistants with the option of moving into Licensed Vocational Nurse category when the license
is in hand.

Completion of the Vocational Nursing Program qualifies the student to take the national licensing examination for Vocational nurses (NCLEX-PN). A Licensed Vocational Nurse (Practical Nurse in all other states) is prepared for employment in ambulatory care settings (Physician’s office, clinics); long-term care (skilled nursing facilities, convalescent, and residential care); rehabilitation facilities, acute care hospitals, psychiatric facilities, hospice, and in the home. A Licensed Vocational Nurse is qualified to apply to the Long Beach City College Associate Degree Nursing Program for the Career Ladder LVN-RN Program. The associate degree also provides students with a broad-based education that prepares them for global citizenry.

This certificate prepares students in basic-entry level fundamental nursing skill sets. Completion of course VN215 prepares students to test for the state competency examination for a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.).

Certificate of Accomplishment, Home Health Aide

Completion guarantees a state certificate as a Home Health Aide. Students must obtain their Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) before attending the VN215 course.
