About Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich
Ludwig Maximilian University was established in 1472 and is also known as the University of Munich. It is an open research university that is associated with the LERU, Europaeum, and the German Excellence Universities. Earlier, the university was known as the Ingolstadt University. The German Universities Excellence Initiative entitles the university as ‘Elite University’ in Germany. In the year of establishment, the university consisted of only four faculties, namely the Faculty of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Philosophy. Initially, the university was built in the Old Academy but later on, in 1826, it was shifted to Ludwigstrabe. It gained popularity as the best university for scientific research during the nineteenth century. In 1903, the university began admitting female students and became a coeducational institute.
The campus of the university comprises of various institutes and research centers. Other than the centers, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz is the main building located at the campus. Some notable research centers along with the eighteen faculties at the campus are Carson Centre for Environment and Society, Research for Integrated Protein Science, Parmenides Research Centre, Nanosystem Initiative Munich, and the Human Science Centre of Munich. The major faculties include the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of History, Faculty of Educational Sciences, and the Faculty of Language and Literature. These faculties that are built within the premises have a well-maintained academic structure and experienced faculty members that provides students with ample knowledge.
The total strength of the university is about 51, 600 students along with 7,757 staff members. 15 percent of the university’s students come from countries other than Germany. It offers an undergraduate degree program and a postgraduate degree program. Also, the curriculum includes diploma and specialized courses. More than 200-degree programs are involved in the academic structure which gives students a great opportunity to choose among the various subjects as per their area of interest. Some well-known subjects of the university are Physics, Psychology, Management, and Business. The faculty members also take students for the industrial visit so that they gain exposure and knowledge about the vast field of research. In addition, some of the research centers located at the university give students a huge scope to learn and understand the research curriculum.
The university has a remarkable list of alumni that includes Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (Nobel Prize in Physics), Valdas Adumkus (President of Lithuania), Max Weber (Renowned Sociologist), Muhammad Iqbal (Urdu Poet), Bertolt Brecht (Theatre Director), and Konrad Adenauer (Former Chancellor of Germany).

How to apply?
- International applicants are advised to enroll themselves for the majority of the programs through the International Office of the Ludwig Maximilian University. Although for some of the Masterโs Programs, the students are required to forward their Application to both the International Office and fill-in the Application form in all respects to the separate graduate department.
- However in certain special cases, the students are required to register themselves to the Office of the University Registrar or the Foundation for University admission.
