* – The 36 credit hours for the Major Requirements are a key feature of the BA in English-Online degree. To meet these requirements, students should take ANY 9 ENG courses (but no more than 2 at the 200-level), plus ENG 350, 355, and 499. ONLINE BA IN GENERAL BUSINESS

The Lewis College of Business, Brad D. Smith Undergraduate School of Business offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Business. This degree is delivered 100% online. This means students can complete the whole degree without coming to campus and without have to meet at designated times to complete lessons. The Online BA in General Business degree does not require you to choose a major. The “major” comes from 24 hours of any combination of upper level LCOB classes. The 24 credit hours for the Major Requirements are a key feature of the BA in General Business degree. To meet these requirements students can choose any eight 300- or 400-level courses offered by the college, excluding 485 and 490 courses and the business core courses listed above. Some examples of these classes include ECN 456: Labor Economics, MGT 446: Green Management, MGT 419: Business and Society, MKT 344: Retail Management, and MKT 437: Consumer Behavior.

ONLINE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (BS MLS)

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science ( BS MLS) is an online program that enables students who have completed their AAS in MLT to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, often while working full time in the clinical laboratory. Applications are accepted from all over the country from graduates of NAACLS accredited MLT programs. Medical Laboratory Scientists perform specialized tests in areas such as flow cytometry, blood bank analysis, serology, immunology, clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics and parasitology. Most MLSs are employed in hospital laboratories, physician’s offices, state and federal health agencies and the armed forces. Upon successful completion, students are eligible for national certification through ASCP as an MLS. BS MLS graduates are also well prepared for graduate programs such as Medicine, Physical Therapy and Forensics.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

The Department of English offers a wide range of courses in literature, language, and writing designed to meet the needs and interests of general-education students, English majors and minors, and students majoring in other fields.

B.A. students may choose from Literary Studies, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, English Education Content, and Generalist majors. College of Education students in English Education 5-Adult qualify for a second major in English in the College of Liberal Arts by completing their Teaching Specialization. English 5-Adult majors should go to the College of Liberal Arts office to declare the second major in English.

Although the areas differ, the goals are essentially the same: an acquaintance with English and American literature necessary for the liberally educated person; a knowledge of the practices necessary for perceptive reading and writing; an ability to write English with competence and grace; and a sense of English studies as a discipline. The capstone experience for English majors consists of ENG 499: Senior Capstone, which requires a capstone project to be determined by the student in collaboration with the instructor.

Film Studies minor

Description of the DBA Program

The Marshall University Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program is a research-based doctoral program that combines a disciplined approach to scholarship with a focus on compelling problems of practice. The DBA program is a 66-credit hour, three-year, hybrid program that requires students to prepare an applied research proposal and dissertation. Students will study seminal and contemporary business literature to develop research questions in their area of interest. They will perform literature reviews, design and perform research studies, analyze data, and draw relevant conclusions that affect economic development and business innovation. Students will choose a concentration that focuses on one broad business area, and they will be required to complete a proposal and dissertation as part of the program.

COUNSELING

The mission of the Marshall University Counseling Program is to prepare aspiring Counselors to serve their communities and schools as ethical, competent, and culturally sensitive practitioners.

Overview

The Counseling Department is located in the College of Education and Professional Development, co-located on the Huntington and South Charleston campuses of Marshall University.

In our 60-hour program, we prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions needed to meet the challenges associated with entry into the field of Counseling as Professional Counselors.

Program graduates in the Clinical Mental Health emphasis are eligible to apply for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential through the West Virginia Board of Examiners in Counseling–when they complete post-graduate supervision and pass the National Counselor Exam (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Exam (NCMHCE).

Program graduates in the School Counseling emphasis are eligible to apply for both the LPC-WV license through the West Virginia Board of Examiners in Counseling—when they complete post-graduate supervision and pass the National Counselor Exam, and the Pre-K—Adult School Counseling Certification through the West Virginia Department of Education upon graduation and by passing the PRAXIS II Professional School Counselor Examination (#5421).

In addition to these two major areas of emphasis, we offer a five-course Graduate Certificate of Advanced Studies in Violence, Loss, and Trauma Counseling, currently the state’s only graduate level initiative providing a sequential, specialized professional development opportunity for mental health professionals focusing on traumatology and trauma-informed mental health counseling.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling emphasis and the School Counseling emphasis of Marshall University’s Counseling Program are both accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Marshall University is accredited as an institution of higher learning by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The College of Education and Professional Development and the School Counseling emphasis area are accredited by the West Virginia State Department of Education.

Course Delivery

Campus-based Option

The Counseling Program is committed to reaching students across the state who are wanting to continue their graduate education. The Program is offered in a hybrid format with a mixture of live, face-to-face class meetings and online content delivery. Several courses in the program are delivered as fully online courses and several are taught with 3-5 class meetings over the course of the semester and the remaining content online.

Live classes are taught in the evening (4 pm or later) on both campuses, but may or may not be offered on both campuses each semester. The Schedule of Courses on the university web page will help you determine when and where those live meetings will be held.

All Counseling students are required to complete site-based clinical experiences for both the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling emphasis. COUN 608 – Practicum (3 credit hours) requires a minimum of 100 site-based hours (40 direct & 60 indirect). COUN 691 – Clinical Mental Health (6 credit hours) and COUN 698 – School (6 credit hours) require a minimum of 600 site-based hours (240 direct & 360 indirect). It is highly recommended that students complete the internship course over two semesters for 3 credit hours per semester. Students are required to obtain acceptable site-placements pending final approval of the Counseling Program Clinical Placement Coordinator and course instructor. Guidelines for acceptable sites and additional Practicum and Internship information are outlined in the Practicum and Internship Handbook. Following these procedural guidelines, students will use SupervisionAssist to search for potential sites, apply for admittance to Practicum and Internship courses, upload appropriate documents for their clinical courses, and possibly attend their Practicum and Internship course meetings.

Distance Education Program Option

The Marshall University College of Education and Professional Development Counseling Program offers a Distance Education Program Option for students who want to complete a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling, with an emphasis in either Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling. The program is offered in a hybrid format, using a combination of synchronous (real-time video/virtual participation) courses and fully online asynchronous courses. Courses are offered on a semester schedule, Fall, Spring, and Summer. Please note that COUN 673 & COUN 630 are not offered during summer semesters.
