As a student in the MS chemistry master degree, you can deepen your knowledge about your favorite part of chemistry. You will carry out aย scientific research project within the field, and you will follow courses that provide you with background and insight into your chosen area of study.

Master of Science In Chemistry

A masters in chemistryย degree will give you the opportunity to gain specialized expertise within a field that particularly captured your interest during your bachelorโ€™s degree studies. During the first semester (or even before then), you choose a supervisor. He or she will be responsible for helping you through your masterโ€™s studies and have particular responsibility for the research project you choose for your thesis. Many students will have a supervisor from an external institution.

You will draw up a plan for your masterโ€™s degree course. The only mandatory course is KJM-MENA4010, in which you learn a range of experimental methods. You can also study library routines and education science. Apart from your thesis, the remainder of your degree will consist of a selection of subject courses of your choice that together will provide relevant theoretical support for your practical work.

As a masterโ€™s student at the Department of Chemistry, you will find yourself amongst Norwayโ€™s leading researchers in the field. Amongst other things, we host CTCC, a Centre of Excellence in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry.

Other focus areas are in association with FERMIO, Functional Energy-related Materials in Oslo, whose work includes developing new types of semiconductors, electrolytes and fuel cells. The Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, SMN, is a primary national centre in its field. Other central activities at the Department of Chemistry are related to analysis and environment (the Marie Curie Centre of Analytical Chemistry, and research in environmental chemistry and atmospheric chemistry), molecular structures and organic synthesis (tuberculosis medicine, neurotransmitter analogies, protein structures and organic materials). In addition to the academic content of your studies, we focus on giving you a good educational experience.

Admission requirements for master’s in chemistry

Admission to thisย masters in chemistryย / study option requires:

  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification and a completed bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
  • a specialization defined by the programme/study option
  • a minimum grade average of C (in the Norwegian grading scale) or equivalent from the specialization in your degree.

Required specialization

The academic requirements for admission to the masters in chemistryย  are at least 60 ECTS credits chemistry, 30 ECTS credits chemistry related courses, 10 ECTS credits mathematics and 5 ECTS credits physics. Please contact the study coordinator at the Department of Chemistry if you have questions regarding academic requirements.

Masters degree in chemistry structure

The masters in chemistryย  consists of three parts: The Masterโ€™s thesis (research project), theoretical curriculum related to your project and other courses (interdisciplinary courses, non-scientific activities and methodical training).

The Master thesis

The Ms Chemistry thesis can be of either 60 or 30 ECTS credits. All supervisors at the Department of Chemistry offer theses of 60 ECTS credits, but in most of the experimental parts of the field (organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and inorganic chemistry) it may be difficult to find a research project suitable for a 30 ECTS credits thesis.

Apart from the extent of the research project, the two different master projects have a different time frame.

  • 30 ECTS credit thesis: The topic of the research project is presented at a given date in the beginning of the final semester. Deadline for hand-in is 17 weeks after this date.
  • 60 ECTS credit thesis: The topic of the research project is known from the start, and the work may be divided overย several semesters. However. The last semester of theย master programย should be used exclusively for the final 30 ECTS of theย thesis project.ย Hand-in date is on a fixed date in the final semester, usually November 15th for thoseย who start in the fall and May 15th for those who start in the spring.
