Graduate studies in animal science are offered to students interested in scientific research pertaining to livestock production, reproduction, nutrition, and related areas. A variety of degree programs exist across the country at both university and college levels.
A typical course load is two or three courses per semester with a full-time academic schedule involving summer sessions as well as optional co-op placements during the winter term. Most programs also require that students spend some time doing independent research projects under the supervision of an individual faculty member at some point during their studies.
The Department of Animal Biosciences offers programs leading to a Ph.D., a MSc (thesis or non-thesis), and a MAgSc degree in Animal Biosciences with options in Ruminant Nutrition, Equine Physiology, and Livestock Reproduction.
Students who have completed the MSc or MAgSc degrees may apply to complete their PhD at the University of Alberta following successful completion of research work at one or more other Canadian universities (written approval from both home institution and host institution required).

- Beef Production Systems/Grazinglands Ecology: This program assists students to understand the structure and function of beef production systems with a focus on animal nutrition, reproduction, and health. It also focuses on the ecology of grazing lands and its importance for maintaining ecological diversity in both rangeland ecosystems as well as intensively managed pasture operations.
- Equine Physiology: The course work includes core courses in anatomy, physiology, behavior, reproduction, nutrition and management that are supplemented by elective courses related to equine health management or other areas of interest such as breeding or farriery.
- Livestock Reproductive Physiology: The curriculum covers topics relevant to both male and female reproductive physiology while emphasizing molecular mechanisms underlying reproductive processes.
There are many universities throughout Canada that offer animal science courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. For example, the University of British Columbia offers an Animal Science program with a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as a Master’s in Animal Science.
The University of Alberta also offers an animal science program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, namely Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Animal Sciences or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Agriculture & Applied Biology – Animal Production, respectively.
Similar degrees can be pursued at the University of Queensland; however their bachelor’s degree is titled “Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery” while the master’s degree is called “Master Of Veterinary Clinical Studies”. In addition to this there is also a doctoral programs available for those who wish to further their studies into veterinary medicine after completing either one or two years in clinical practice.
The nutritional field that focuses on the animals’ dietary needs, for those in agriculture and food production and those in the zoo, aquariums, wildlife and domestic animals as well is called Animal Nutrition study.
