Medical Laboratory Science Programs in Canada

The UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a remarkable opportunity to study with numerous world renowned faculty and research programs. We are recognized as national and international leaders in both basic and clinical research. Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Since it is necessary to understand the normal working of the system to fully define the changes associated with disease, the areas represented at UBC cover a wide range of fields and approaches.

Work at all levels of biological organization is involved, from protein to lipoprotein biochemistry and molecular biology through cell and tumour biology, animal models for studies on pulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiology and viral and bacterial infection processes, to clinical studies on human population and the AIDS epidemic.

Medical Laboratory Technology a.k.a clinical laboratory science helps diagnose, treat and prevent disease through clinical laboratory tests. It is complementary to medical science. It involves analysis of body matter such as fluid, tissue, and blood. It also covers micro-organism screening, chemical analyses, and cell count. These professionals, medical lab technicians and technologists, play an important role in collecting information, sampling, testing, reporting and documenting medical investigations

What Kind of Career Can You Expect With a Master’s in Medical Technology?

As you may have expected, the vast majority of students with this degree choose to work as medical technologists. They work at hospitals, private practices, research companies and other medical establishments around the world. They are responsible for performing various laboratory tests such as:

  • Diabetes and cancer screening.
  • Prenatal blood tests.
  • HIV/AIDS tests.
  • Tests for bacterial and viral infections.

These individuals usually work alongside physicians, nurses and pharmacists, and they sometimes come in close contact with patients. They operate complex, expensive medical equipment and are usually responsible for cleaning and maintaining it. These individuals have an important job, and the results of the tests they perform will influence the treatment that a patient undergoes.

A significant portion of the job involves testing and collecting bodily fluids and tissue samples. Those who work in blood banks are often responsible for manually counting blood cells and bone marrow. After interpreting results, medical technologists may submit them to pathologists for further review. If you elect to work in a private clinical environment, you may find yourself assisting scientists and other researchers.

Some medical technologists elect to educate others. If you choose to stop at a master’s, you will probably find employment at a technical or vocational school. If you elect to earn a postgraduate degree, you will be able to teach at university level. You will teach students the basic concepts of the field, and ensure that they can actively apply their knowledge. Other career paths may include:

  • Medical scientists
  • Pathologist
  • Phlebotomist

Master of Science in Laboratory Medicine and Biomedical Science (MS)

The master of science degree in laboratory medicine and biomedical science offers two tracts: (1) clinical laboratory science and (2) biomedical research. Admission to this program requires the successful completion of a bachelor of science (BS) degree in medical laboratory science and national certification as a medical laboratory scientist OR a bachelor of science degree in a related science, such as biology, chemistry, or microbiology.

Areas for advanced study and research specialization include immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, clinical chemistry, toxicology, microbiology, hematology, hematopathology, immunohematology, and genetics.

Program Purpose Statement

“To support the goals of the Department of Pathology by enhancing the understanding of disease, teaching knowledge to others, and improving medical diagnosis and treatment of disease.”

Program Objectives

A critical component of administering the MS program in laboratory medicine and biomedical science is the evaluation of its effectiveness in meeting program objectives. Outcomes and objectives are assessed throughout the graduate program, in successful completion of didactic coursework, projects, preliminary exams, thesis research, and thesis defense. The objectives of the program are to:

  1. Increase the student’s technical competence in the area of study.
  2. Develop an approach to research procedures and understand the importance of properly defining research problems.
  3. Provide a working background in scientific writing and data management.
  4. Increase the student’s awareness and knowledge of new laboratory-related technologies.
  5. Prepare the student for continuation into an appropriate PhD program or medical school, if desired.

The program also focuses on three areas for students to obtain experience and confidence in that are important to their professional advancement. These areas are:

  1. Organization and presentation of  scientific information to peers and faculty members.
  2. Review and interpretation of scientific literature.
  3. Improvement of technical writing skills.
