Master of Science (MS) programs in oil and gas engineering are focused primarily on training students in the common processes and procedures used in this field. Most of these programs provide training in multiple engineering fields, including reservoir, natural gas, and geological engineering. Both thesis and non-thesis programs are available, and students must pass a comprehensive exam prior to graduation. In order to apply, students must hold a bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering field, but some exceptions may be made depending on the student’s educational background and experience.


Master’s Degree in Oil and Gas Engineering

Thesis programs typically require completion of approximately 30 credits in core and elective courses, plus 6 credits earned by preparing and defending the thesis. Non-thesis students usually complete about 36 total credits of coursework, plus a final, all-inclusive exam.

MS programs in oil and gas engineering involve advanced studies in areas such as rock mechanics, petrophysics, enhanced oil recovery, oil field management, well-drilling, completion, and stimulation. Possible course titles include:

Job opportunities for oil and gas engineers, also known as petroleum engineers, are predicted to be favorable between 2019 and 2029, primarily because of the number of jobs opening due to retirements, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www. bls.gov). These engineers are projected to have a 3% job growth during this time frame. In May 2019, the BLS reported that petroleum engineers earned an average annual salary of approximately $156,780.

Continuing Education

The BLS states that in order to keep up with improvements in technology, continuing education is vital for engineers. This can be accomplished through opportunities provided by professional organizations, such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), which offer continuing education training programs, conferences, and competency certification courses. Alternatively, research-oriented students may pursue a Ph.D. in the field.

#1. TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

The Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech University offers students unique insights into the field of energy extraction with the Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering. The department is home to a diverse group of faculty researchers whose expertise ranges from cold fracturing, artificial lift optimization, sand control, wellbore integrity, and beyond. The university offers the graduate degree in petroleum engineering as a thesis or non-thesis program. Students completing the thesis option will earn at least 30 graduate credits beyond their bachelorโ€™s degree; this includes the six credit hours dedicated to developing and writing an original thesis project. The thesis option is ideal for students who hope to pursue a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering or a related field. For other students, the option to complete the degree without a thesis may be ideal. Non-thesis students will earn 33 graduate credit hours, allowing for additional coursework to help students meet their career and academic goals. Students in both programs will complete a comprehensive examination before earning their degrees. The department also offers a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree, which allows students to take some graduate-level coursework in their fourth year of studies. Currently, Advanced Reservoir Engineering, Water Flooding Techniques, and Advanced Drilling Techniques can be taken at night at the universityโ€™s Lubbock, Texas, campus, or students can join via live stream or watch a recording. Outstanding students enrolled in the degree programs can join Pi Epsilon Tau, the universityโ€™s Petroleum Engineering Honorary Society. Additional groups include student chapters of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Society of Petroleum Engineering Educators. Students who enroll in the program will be joining the Texas Technical University System, which includes four campuses, including TTU. More than 50 students are enrolled in graduate programs, and undergraduate students interested in pursuing an MS can join the Petroleum Engineering Departmentโ€™s quick start program. The program is open to undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering and who currently have a GPA above 3.4. Students may complete up to six credit hours of graduate courses during their last undergraduate year. The university offers students many opportunities to collaborate with faculty and industry leaders. Graduate students interested in related programs can explore the schoolโ€™s Natural Gas Engineering & Management and Geological Engineering programs.
