McGeorge rigorously trains law students for leadership positions in today’s global economy. The school’s success is built on a distinguished faculty, high quality students, committed and involved alumni, and a beautiful, spacious campus with state-of-the art classrooms and student facilities.

McGeorge has a robust graduate law program. LLM and JSD students receive special assistance with course selection, class success, and adjusting to student life in the United States. The small LLM class size makes it easy to bond and get to know everyone in the program. In addition to the LLM programs, McGeorge offers JD certificate and concentration programs and extensive experiential learning opportunities.

Law School Enrollment

McGeorge has 860 law students enrolled for 2012–2013. Of those, 25 are LLM and 3 are JSD students.

The Faculty

The McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific faculty are among the world’s foremost experts, producing faculty scholarship on a wide range of subjects. From our faculty who teach in centers and institutes to those who share their expertise through our conferences/symposia, McGeorge has some of the greatest legal minds in the world.

McGeorge faculty have authored textbooks that are used in hundreds of law schools across the nation. Their work appears in top law reviews and journals. They have written numerous books, including the popular Thomson/West Global Issues series, and are highly sought after by the media on a variety of topics.

McGeorge faculty bring years of experience to their teaching; practitioners add to the classroom the expertise and wisdom gained from the daily give-and-take of law practice in international venues. Physical Facilities

The McGeorge Legal Studies Center was opened in 2011 and houses the Gordon D. Schaber Law Library. The state-of-the-art library serves the Sacramento legal community of students, law clerks, and members of the Sacramento County bench and bar. The Legal Studies Center houses a well-equipped library and dozens of unique study spaces both inside and outside. The student center has dining services, couches, a large-screen TV, and conference room space for group study.


One of the many advantages to studying law at McGeorge School of Law is the affordability of housing in Sacramento, as compared to Los Angeles or San Francisco. You can choose to live on campus in student housing or off campus in an apartment or house. There are hundreds of new apartment complexes in the growing Sacramento metropolitan area, each with ready access to an excellent freeway system that leaves most students just minutes from the law school. McGeorge also has four on-campus apartment buildings, each strictly devoted to students, and all located on the campus grounds.

LLM Programs/Areas of Specialization

The McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific offers graduate law programs leading to the master of laws (LLM) degree in the fields of

  • Transnational Business Practice: A single degree with two separate tracks, one with an international internship, one without. McGeorge’s international law program is recognized as one of the top international law program in the United States.
  • US Law and Policy: A single degree with two separate tracks, one for foreign lawyers, and one for domestic lawyers interested in Public Law and Policy.
  • Water Resources Law: A single degree with two separate tracks, which allow for curricular focus in either US-based or international water resources law.

You may also pursue a doctor of juridical science (JSD) in International Water Resources.

Student Services and Organizations

Graduate students from countries other than the United States join a community of law students studying on the McGeorge campus, and receive special assistance with course selection, class success, and adjusting to student life in the United States. As a McGeorge graduate student, you will join an international community comprised of students from all over the world. Your future classmates will be from countries such as Austria, Botswana, China, Egypt, India, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Practicing your legal skills doesn’t always happen in class or during an internship. Chartered Student Organizations (or as we call them “CSOs”) play an integral role in the campus environment and educational process for law students at McGeorge, and the many events hosted annually directly enhance academic and career preparation, cultural awareness, public service, leadership skills, and networking opportunities.

Career Services

At the McGeorge Career Development Office (CDO), students and graduates are assisted in the development of their personal careers. The CDO helps students and graduates to discover and expand their options.

Throughout the year, the CDO presents programs on topics ranging from practice areas to job search strategies and how to dress for one’s first interview. CDO sponsors on- and off-campus job fairs as well as alumni and community networking opportunities, and provides 24-hour access to hundreds of job postings along with the ability to apply for jobs online through the web-based career management system.

CDO’s staff is experienced and well-rounded, with practical experience in private law firm, government, public interest, academic, and corporate settings. Staff members are eager to work with students and graduates in one-on-one training and counseling sessions.
