Understanding internships for F1 students
Going to college in the United States? You’ll be happy to know that F1 visa students can work legally in the U.S., either during or after their studies. To do so, you must meet one of many requirements, including proving sufficient financial support and demonstrating your acceptance to an institution or university and your intent to return home after your studies and internships for international students.
In addition to showing that you have sufficient financial support for yourself and any accompanying dependents, you must demonstrate your intent to return home by providing a letter from an educational institution or other official entity stating that they will monitor your compliance with the conditions of your F1 student visa. The school must also provide evidence that it will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by you if you violate these conditions or overstay your F1 student visa.
If you are interested in doing an Optional Practical Training (OPT) internship as part of your studies at an accredited U.S. university, then you may apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
[Get matched with internships in the USA for international students]
If you’re a student looking to study abroad in the USA, there are two main types of visas that you can apply for.
The first is called an F1 visa. This type of visa is reserved specifically for international students who attend school in their home countries but wish to complete an internship in the USA. If you’re planning on staying in the US for less than a year and will be working as an employee at a company or organization while you’re here, this is likely the visa type you’ll need.
However, if you’re interested in completing an internship through a structured program—one that provides housing and insurance along with legal sponsorship—you may be eligible for a different type of visa, known as a J1 Visa (also known as Exchange Visitor Program). While these programs don’t always provide internships themselves, they do offer opportunities for students like yourself to complete them legally under their sponsorship.
Other short term internships for international students
If you’re an international student looking for an internship in the U.S., you’ve probably noticed that it can be a challenge to find the right opportunity and start it in time to meet your academic schedule. That’s where internship programs come in!
Internship programs help students like you identify, apply for and land internships that fit their needs by tapping into their extensive networks to connect you with opportunities.
If you’re looking for an internship that is 2-3 months long or shorter, then an internship program may be the best option for you. You can apply directly through them, or they can help facilitate your search by reaching out to their network of companies that are hiring interns.
Internship programs are also great if you want more than one internship while studying in the U.S., but don’t have enough time or money to do them independently. These programs will help match up with companies who are hiring multiple interns at once so that you don’t have to go through the time-consuming process of finding each one individually!
Medical internships in the United States
Interns are essentially first year residents, who work alongside fully qualified doctors and medical staff in a working environment, where they practice and train under direct supervision. Internships are a crucial step to becoming a qualified doctor, dentist, surgeon or podiatrist, and the process begins during the last year of medical school.
In their final year, students are expected to apply for postgraduate internships in a chosen field of specialization, by contacting hospitals and medical centers for placements. Internships are highly competitive, especially those in the more desired fields of specialization such as surgery. Interviews and careful matching of a graduate to an internship often takes many months, and it is not uncommon for interns to have to apply for several programs before they are accepted.
In the United States, completion of an internship is the minimum requirement for which a general license to practice medicine is granted. Many interns, however, continue for several more years working as a resident in the hospital or medical centre, acquiring all the skills and experience necessary to specialize in their chosen field of medicine. Increasingly, internships are being integrated with residency programs, and the term intern is slowly being phased out, with many medical settings now referring to interns as “first year residents.” Interns work alongside qualified medical practitioners in medical settings, practicing medicine under supervision. Many interns find that their internship is the first time they get to practice actual hands-on medicine experience, with their preceding medical training having provided them with the theoretical background.
Qualifying for an internship
To qualify for an internship, a medical student has to have successfully obtained a medical degree, and usually take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) in order to qualify to practice general medicine. Internships are notoriously hard work. Many interns find themselves working long hours, up to 16 hours continuously, with a working week often exceeding 60 hours. The work is also hard and varied. Interns perform the same tasks as qualified medical practitioners, albeit under supervision, and often find themselves conducting tasks that other professional prefer not to do.
While successfully completing an internship and attaining the USMLE or COMLEX qualifications enables a graduate to practice medicine, many interns continue with their residencies. Internships provide graduates with the opportunity to finalize which field of medicine they wish to specialize in, with the exposure to a proper medical setting helping them to decide if certain areas of medicine are actually suitable. If interns continue with a residency, then the long, unsociable hours continue, with it not uncommon for residents in their second year to face 24-hour shifts and over 80 hours in a working week. Despite the pressure, many interns find they learn more during their internship than in the whole time at medical school, with the hands-on experience proving invaluable for their future careers.
Gap Medics provides year-round hospital work experience for people aged 16 and over. Our shadowing placements offer a unique insight into the work of doctors, nurses, midwives and dentists – helping students to focus their career aspirations before embarking upon medical training.
Medical graduates in the US go to residency directly after graduation and first year of residency is usually considered as internship. Please note that there is no internship in the US that is similar to the ones offered in India or other ‘British medical system’ countries.

How to find internships for international students in the USA
- Step 1: What kind of position do you want? The most important aspect of completing an internship should be… the internship! Focus on your career goals, past experience, and the skills you want to learn before filtering through internship opportunities for international students.
- Step 2: Location isn’t everything. While your internship location will factor into your experience, your biggest consideration should be your host company. Research the company’s reputation, other employees’ experiences, and the internship’s responsibilities to determine a company or program. You could live in the best city imaginable, but if your fulltime job is drab, it will put a damper on the whole experience.

- Step 4: Compare what’s included. The next best thing after the position itself is the package. Check to see if programs include legal sponsorships, are paid or unpaid, and have other perks like cultural excursion.
- Step 5: Weigh your options. Read past participant reviews and reach out directly to programs with specific questions. A deciding factor could be something like hearing great testimonials. Save programs to compare side by side with MyGoAbroad.
- Step 6: Pack your bags and leave! Wahoo!
