LSU Health Shreveport is home to the only medical school in north Louisiana and one of only three in the state. Medical students interact with patients from their very first semester and learn from a combination of lectures, small groups, standardized patient exercises and clinical skills throughout their training.

We strive to provide students with a variety of tools to enhance their learning experience. To complement our outstanding faculty instruction, the School of Medicine offers Lecturio (www.lecturio.com) to first, second and third year medical students. Lecturio offers a video library, smart paced repetition to improve memory and a 4000+ question bank to aid in preparation for major tests. This excellent resource is available through a mobile app making on-the-go access to study materials readily available.
For those with a heightened interest in research, the school offers joint PhD programs with both the School of Graduate Studies and Louisiana Tech. Students can also opt to enroll in the Research Distinction Track to or apply to become part of the American Medical Student Research Journal, founded in 2013 by our medical students. The School of Medicine counts a Faculty of over 500 with a class size of 150 for fall 2021. Plans are underway to increase class size to 200 over the upcoming years. This expansion is being made possible due to the construction of the Center for Medical Education and Wellness.

FAMILY DAY AT THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Each school year family members and friends of medical school students visit our campus for the annual Family Day event. Family Day is an opportunity for friends and family members to get a first-hand look at what students experience during their four years in medical school. They tour campus and learn more about student life, academic programs and medical school curriculum, along with the various clinical skills labs and hands-on learning opportunities available to students.
MEDICAL STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM
Each summer medical students work with a faculty mentor on a research project that is then showcased during the fall at our annual presentation fair. In addition to being able to share their work, there is also an opportunity to receive an award in each prize category. This program fosters research activity, inspires students to learn more about the research process and generates quality research evidence.

Our May Gold Humanism Honor Society Student of the Month is Gregor Dierks, MSIII! Gregor Dierks is a compassionate and kind person who cares incredibly deeply about those around him, and there is no doubt the patients recognize his positive impact on their care. During a H&P exercise in first year, Gregor interviewed a patient who had been in the hospital for ~3 weeks who had not had a single visitor come to see him during their stay. Gregor took time to talk with the patient about their life, experiences the patient had, about the patient’s family, etc. Gregor has also had several occasions where he has taken time to check on his critically sick patients in the hospital multiple times during a shift to ensure that they were comfortable and obtained updates. Gregor Dierks is truly one of the most selfless, kind, and compassionate people and has no doubt been a huge asset to the LSU Health Shreveport family. Congratulations, Gregor!
Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans is a 4-year MD-granting program that has adapted their curriculum to better teach modern medicine. Louisiana medical schools offer a broad range of GPAs and MCAT scores, so when evaluating how competitive you are, be honest with yourself. Are your MCAT and GPA close to the metrics for accepted students? If not, consider retaking your MCAT or enhancing your GPA. Although Louisiana does not currently have an osteopathic medical school, the University of Louisiana announced a partnership with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2018 with plans to open a new medical school in 2020. As far as MD schools are considered, students should take note whether a school is private or public. Because Tulane University is a private medical school, it matriculates a higher percentage of out-of-state students. There are also differences in terms of tuition when it comes to private versus public medical schools. It is also worth mentioning that both Tulane University and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-New Orleans have fairly large first year class sizes, over 190 students. The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport has a much smaller class, about 135 students. Consider the benefits and drawbacks associated with both types of medical schools. As part of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, the campus in New Orleans offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, as well as two joint medical degree programs through the School of Medicine. The school is home to the Isidore Cohn, Jr. MD Student Learning Center, which has been designed to facilitate medical studies in a small group setting. Students will also have access to the Russell C. Klein MD Center for Advanced Practice, where students have access to a 32-station cadaveric laboratory, along with high fidelity and low fidelity simulation equipment. In addition to traditional medical studies, the school offers a rural scholars track designed to prepare physicians for the specific challenges of working in rural areas.
Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – Shreveport
The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport includes a teaching hospital and bases the curriculum around small group instruction. At the skills center, students undergo healthcare simulation situations in a controlled environment. The facility operates three acute care hospitals and multiple community hospitals. The four-year MD program includes coursework in microbiology and infectious diseases, neuroscience and body systems, as well as several clinical clerkships. Additionally, MD holders may pursue a residency or fellowship in several areas, including anesthesiology, family medicine, obstetrics and pediatrics.
Tulane University of Louisiana
The main campus of Tulane University is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, with an additional campus in Baton Rouge. The specialized campus in Baton Rouge allows students in the LEAD (Leadership, Education, Advocacy and Discovery) Program to work with government healthcare initiatives. Within the School of Medicine, students can earn an MD, as well as combined degrees like the MD/MPH, MD/PhD and MD/MBA. The school also offers a rural medical education program and an accelerated physician training program for students wanting to earn both an undergraduate and graduate degree within six years. Students also have access to Tulane’s 18 centers and institutes that include the Center for Abdominal Transplantation, Tulane Spine Center and Tulane Center for Aging.
Career Requirements
To practice in the U.S., all physicians must graduate from an accredited medical college, complete three-eight years of residency training, and pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. During the first two years of a medical program, students take courses related to patient care and physical systems. During the final two years, they have a chance to complete clinical rotations under the supervision of a licensed physician in areas that include internal medicine, obstetrics and pediatrics.

Tulane University of Louisiana offers 1 Medicine degree programs. It’s a large, private not-for-profit, four-year university in a large city. In 2019, 174 Medicine students graduated with students earning 174 Doctoral degrees.
A degree in medicine is the highest degree one can obtain in the medical field. It’s more commonly known as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). Both are graduate degrees awarded by an accredited school of medicine (medical school). After obtaining an undergraduate degree in a variety of sciences, including pre-medicine, students typically complete four more rigorous years in medical school in order to receive their doctoral degree. After graduation, a student will spend three or more additional years in a medical internship and residency program before starting a career as a physician. While physicians often specialize in a particular type of medicine, medical degrees cover the foundational skills needed to practice medicine, including subjects such as anatomy and physiology, genetics, biochemistry and immunology.
There generally is not an undergraduate degree in medicine specifically; however, there are often pre-med degree programs that combine classes to help prepare students for the MCAT exam, which students are required to pass to get into medical school in the United States. Often, students study some form of life science (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or kinesiology). However, students can receive a bachelor’s degree in any major prior to seeking a degree in medicine.
